90a. Self-Knowledge and God-Knowledge I: Creation of Races up to the Fertilization with Manas (Animal Separations)

Man has gone through the densification that the earth has undergone: the air condenses into a fire mist. We can imagine this state as fog in the mountains. But in some places it was as dense as hot embers: everything still flowed in it, gold and diamonds. |
It is precisely because God, in infinite love, surrenders the image to the manifold that the possibility of the struggle for existence is given. We understand imperfection even more in time. We only need to think of the example of the piano maker and the piano virtuoso. |
Transposed to the wrong place, or rather to the wrong time, the good would be. This example helps us to understand many things. A transposed good is evil. The concept of time in connection with the concept of freedom allows us to understand the different degrees of perfection or even the relatively imperfect, in that it includes the different stages of development. |

Let us follow the development within our group, starting from the center. The earth is in its fourth physical stage, it is very fine matter, ethereal. In this etheric matter, the following are already present: the minerals in their formation, the lower animals in their formation, plants in their formation, and the human being as an astral being. For he has not progressed further within the first three rounds; he has only set the other realms out; he begins to realize himself in etheric matter, and waits to incorporate the etheric matter into the astral form. Man therefore has only the etheric double body. Let us consider this connection of the astral man and the etheric matter. Ether has only one manifestation: it can vibrate, and therefore the only organ that could develop in humans was the one that reacts to vibrations: the sense of hearing. Man could only perceive through hearing. It was still an echo of that harmony of the spheres that the Pythagoreans speak of. Originally, this etheric body was a much more complicated being, because it still contained all the animals that later split off – amphibians, birds, lower and higher mammals. We call these etheric people the 'polar race', because they lived in the zone around the North Pole. Of course, no geological remains of this race remain. The first thing that emerged was, of course, amphibious animals, initially fish. The reproduction of this human being was as follows: initially, he was an astral human being and incorporated matter into this astral being, thus forming himself. This is called self-generation. This process develops in such a way that, as the human being absorbs matter, he enlarges and then splits. This is called 'sprouting'. Blavatsky calls it 'sweat birth'; the expression is not well chosen, the process is more reminiscent of the emergence of one object from another, as in spiritualistic séances. This allows a second organ to form. Air has different densities and can be compressed, while ether is not compressible. This is the reason for the difference between heat and cold, and a sense of touch develops, with a sense of heat and cold. Of this second, the During the Hyperborean period, man was initially still united with what we know as the bird gender and the lower mammal gender. Now the bird gender separated from him first, becoming a gender of its own in the air. But it was not as it later became, because it still had the mammal gender within it. Mythology has preserved this wonderfully in symbols. It registers the deeds of the ancient past, when they still originated from the instincts of the Atlanteans, namely: the bird-man as griffin. Only then does someone understand the symbols from the secret schools when he knows that they are not allegorical straw figures, but registrations of facts. The centaur, for example, is the horse-man, the mammal-man. This split occurred in many different forms, since there were many races: into horse-men, bull-men and so on. It split off from the lower mammal in the denser air of the birds: a reminder of this are the mammals that lay eggs or incubate their young, such as the platypus and marsupials. From humans, the higher animal classes split off, and with each split, humans acquired a new trait in their makeup. When they split off the horses, their intellect developed; that is why the horse is considered a symbol of intellect. We find it in the Apocalypse, in the Indian saga: the horse Kalki; in the middle of the third sub-race, at the time of the Trojan War, with Odysseus, which subjugates this race. A vestige of this is still preserved in the fact that when the real hero, the avatar of our race, will appear, he will have something to do with Kalki, the horse. Likewise, other qualities arose from another split. For example, man could not have had his moral courage if he had not split off the lion. Let us now take a closer look at the third, the Lemurian period. Man has gone through the densification that the earth has undergone: the air condenses into a fire mist. We can imagine this state as fog in the mountains. But in some places it was as dense as hot embers: everything still flowed in it, gold and diamonds. Then the cooling occurred and with it the densification of man. And man not only had to bring forth differently, but he also had to protect. The same mode of reproduction continued until the middle of the Lemurian race. Within the glowing nebula, what is called Kama is still dissolved. We must ask why the hardening happened. Kama was still dissolved, and the astral body of man was still connected with the general Kama masses, although it already had a center. Now the severance of the individual Kama beings occurred. As a result, they withdrew their own power from the surrounding thinner Kama masses. These condensed, became solid because the human being had withdrawn his Kama, which had previously been dissolved in them; this meant that what had previously been floating in the earlier Kama mass now became active from within, and warm-bloodedness arose. Connected with this is the attraction of one being to another. In place of the former, external, chemical elective affinity, sympathy and antipathy now arose, and with that the basis was given for sexuality. We now have: amphibians, which are gradually declining; birds; then lower and higher mammals; and finally man, who is now constituted in such a way that he can enter into this condensed Kama mass. He has reached the point where this force, which was outside, now works from within him. We have the mammal man; he is much more plastic and softer than he is now, therefore subject to strong metamorphoses, malleable and elastic. With different conditions of existence and sensations come different forms. We still find an echo of this in the poets, for example in Ovid's “Metamorphoses”. The fact that man has now shed all animal forms – at least essentially, although he has not yet shed the ape – meant that a highly purified organism was available for his developed Kama body, and he was able to secrete something: a part of the organism to which he could transfer a different power. The nervous system could be developed, and so a twofold being emerged. On the one hand, it had the highest animal form with a bone structure and glandular system; on the other hand, it received the nervous system where this power will emerge – the spinal cord. This system was able to absorb something that until now had only been floating in the environment around the earth, namely manas. This is the fertilization of the human being with the manasic principle. Let us remember that man was once a Kama being, who had a closer relationship to the Kama surrounding him, to the Kama of revelation, which was not selfish and full of desire, but gave itself up. We have creative and created Kama. This Kama, from which man drew himself, has received an increase of selflessness in that man sucked in selfishness. By drawing out this selfish Kama, man has become earthly loving. And outside, divine love envelops him in increased selflessness. Within, his Manas works. Thus we have three things in man: 1. the sensual love arising in him, Now something completely new occurs: the passing through karma in the human sense, in general an order as we have it now – the distinguishing of good and evil in the world. It is one of the most frequently asked questions: Where does imperfection come from in the world? When Manas was impregnated, it appeared in its sharpest form as evil. But how, we ask, can something imperfect arise from a perfect cosmic reason? How can something imperfect arise from something perfect? As long as we consider the matter in its abstractness, we will not be able to find an answer. However, we will be able to do so if we consider it in such a way that the origin spreads out in a diversity, a diversity in space and in time. No matter how perfect your soul may be, it will direct the right hand as well as the left – that is because it has not made the hands in its own image. But that is what befits the all-loving Deity. It is precisely because God, in infinite love, surrenders the image to the manifold that the possibility of the struggle for existence is given. We understand imperfection even more in time. We only need to think of the example of the piano maker and the piano virtuoso. Each one does an excellent job in his or her place. The piano maker is an artist in his own way. But if he were so in love with his technical work that he were also to start knocking and hammering in the concert hall while the virtuoso is playing, disharmony would arise. Let us keep in mind that beings do not reach their goal at the same speed. At the end of the lunar epoch, there were beings who had only just reached the point where development required it. Others were left behind. We have not yet considered what fertilized. We have considered the matter from which the Pitri developed and the soul of the Pitri. But not yet the drop of Manas, a piece of the higher that hovered around the earth. That the drop can sink in is only possible because these higher beings, these creative powers, which now endowed man with Manas, have also developed for this purpose. Every human manas is a thought in these beings that hover around the earth – in the Dhyan-Chohans, in the Elohim – that had to mature to this extent. That these supermundane beings became mature enough to be endowed with manas arose from the fact that they learned something on the moon. Something happened on the moon that can only be described as “supernatural artistic activity” - arranged with the greatest cosmic wisdom. Man could not have devised all his artistic structures as wisely as beings gifted with lungs, hearts and stomachs. That is why the lunar epoch is called the “cosmic wisdom”. This was replaced on earth by “cosmic love”. In terms of love, human beings are just as dependent on beings that are above them as they were in terms of wisdom. The wisdom involved here appears as Manas. |

And that the time would come when man would redeem Lucifer within himself is a beautiful process that has not yet come to an end. And the whole thing also underlies Christianity. It is best expressed in the legend and meaning of Christmas. Christ sends the spirit of light, the Paraclete, who fights for humanity. |
If you summarize this with what I started from, you will see that Lucifer has yet another meaning. He undergoes a development that he should have undergone during the lunar epoch. Therefore, with the great gift of human freedom, something has come that is out of place – and moral evil has its origin here. |
The Pythagorean disciples first had to create the conditions for the highest questions before asking them. Now you will also understand that there are different degrees of the luciferic principle in these retarded beings. Wisdom can be sought for its own sake, but it can also be put in the service of Kama. |

The lunarian epoch is also called the “cosmic wisdom”. It was replaced on Earth by “cosmic love”. In terms of love, man is just as dependent on beings that are above him as he was in terms of wisdom. The wisdom involved here is Manas, and the ability that is poured in is Love. That is why it is said esoterically that the God of Wisdom is replaced by the God of Love. The powers acquired the ability to infuse sexuality into beings through the lessons learned in wisdom on the moon. What they could now bring to man was the spark of manas, and they had to work from the outside, glowing the human body with love. In particular, it is so clear that Jehovah was connected to human love through man. It became possible to fertilize from above, because certain beings had progressed further in their development. They were the good guides of the human manas, the first initiated Arhats. In a cool revelation from above, wisdom would have come to him. There were other beings who, with human kama, now achieved what they had not yet attained on the moon: They endowed him with passion for wisdom. These entities had to ascend with the people, sharing their destiny, to what they had not yet achieved on the moon. They also became man's best friend. With that, we have the Luciferian principle. With divine love in the Christ principle, the luciferic principle has changed. This will give us the key to the story of the Fall of Man in Paradise. That Lucifer is, so to speak, the opposite of Christ was a self-evident truth in all religions before Christ's incarnation. The explanation of the Luciferian principle can be found in the Vatican archives. If you summarize this with what I started from, you will see that Lucifer has yet another meaning. He undergoes a development that he should have undergone during the lunar epoch. Therefore, with the great gift of human freedom, something has come that is out of place – and moral evil has its origin here. Man owes his further stage of development to the ability to do evil. On an even higher level, we are once again faced with the mystery that higher development can only be achieved by leaving something else behind at a lower level. The higher Dhyan Cohans had to face the luciferic principle within themselves in order to gain the ability to shape beings endowed with Manas. Lucifer was left behind so that the Godhead could rise higher. Thus the Godhead owes its level in the present round to Lucifer. Man is here to become an image of God. But the deity had to leave something behind to advance. When the Luciferian principle in humanity is redeemed, the deity will be redeemed from having set Lucifer aside. Man is not here for his own sake, but to contribute to the glory of God - according to the apostle Paul. A good God would never be able to create free human beings; to do that, he had to be a God who endowed human beings with impulses from only one side, and had to leave behind a being that endowed human beings with impulses from the other side. The Pythagorean disciples first had to create the conditions for the highest questions before asking them. Now you will also understand that there are different degrees of the luciferic principle in these retarded beings. Wisdom can be sought for its own sake, but it can also be put in the service of Kama. The luciferic principle has therefore also created the arts and sciences, which can also be put in the service of sensual gratification. |

We have become acquainted with the form of the first round, the second, the third and now that of the fourth, which consists in the mineral man being subject to birth and death. The third realm was under the sign of elective affinity. The second was under the sign of the number. What will the form of the next round be? |
That is the achievement of the fourth round. If the self understands itself correctly, it must withdraw its own being. The luciferic principle wanted to lead it further. |
90a. Self-Knowledge and God-Knowledge I: Past and Future Rounds

When speaking of the following rounds, it might seem as if one were telling something that is not known. However, what is told is undoubtedly true insofar as it relates to the laws. Man must cooperate in the future and familiarize himself with these laws. Water must always be created when water and oxygen come together. The laws are eternal, and in so far as they are lawful, the future is revealed. In the next rounds we know that the empires will be absorbed and that man will become man in the seventh round. The question arises as to what the outer form of the future plant kingdom will be. For it is form that comes to consciousness and life. We have become acquainted with the form of the first round, the second, the third and now that of the fourth, which consists in the mineral man being subject to birth and death. The third realm was under the sign of elective affinity. The second was under the sign of the number. What will the form of the next round be? It is conditioned by the fact that man will then be much more plastic, not opposed by a rigid mineral kingdom. What will this form be shaped from? Always from that which remains behind at the expense of which it develops further. That is now evil. Man develops through karma towards the good. He overcomes karma completely in the fourth round; he extracts the good and leaves the bad behind. So that from this evil the forms of the next, the fifth round, are formed. So that the fifth round will outwardly bear the plastic impression of all the evil deeds of the fourth round. The New Testament gives us the image of this truth in the Last Judgment. Evil will be visible. People will bear in their faces the good that they have acquired and will produce beings through their previous evil deeds. The karmic debt register will be open.
This has the effect of a dandruff remedy, in that it shows that man cannot hide his evil. He will find it as buried, a new realm that interposes itself between the animal kingdom and the human kingdom; inferior people who bear the deeds of the guilt of present humanity. Now man can only absorb again what he has set out of himself. He does this with the realms, with birth and death, with the evil that he releases in order to absorb it again in the form. Personally, he will be able to redeem it and balance it out in this round, but his deeds will be buried in a new realm, in objectivity. He can free himself because he can achieve innocence at the expense of the evil that has been released. All the Kama that is impregnated with evil is now outside of him. This evil makes it impossible for him to reach the higher self. It is now outside of him. The higher self can now shape its aura, the outside can shape the inside. When the outside then completely shapes the inside without hindrance from Kama, then we have the immediate mental self. So that in the sixth round humanity has the mental body. The inner self expresses itself in the outer when we give what we speak to the waves of the air. That is what we will do in the sixth round. No more hiding of the inner self; whatever a person is, he pours out, his whole soul lies open. As man expresses himself through his entire being, the sixth round is that of the word. The word does not become flesh, it could only become flesh in Christ, but it does become form, shape. It was similar in the second round; only the sounds were inarticulate, the beings did not speak them; but now the names are spoken. Every human being speaks his name into the world being. Novalis' writings are in this respect like intuitions of great theosophical truths. The union with the heavenly Sophia is then consciously achieved. In the seventh round, complete union is now achieved. The human soul is not lost in the totality; each person has their name, but these names resonate together in a great harmony of sentences. And this name is that of the Earth Deity. No degree of consciousness that has been attained can be lost, but together all these names resound and give that of the Earth Deity. Goethe: Gewoben ist [Lücke in der Mitschrift] That is the immortal garment that remains, and in the esoteric language it is called 'divinity'. So the first form: reflection in the other, objectivity These are the seven forms through which the Pitri passes during a planetary evolution. Why does evolution continue to develop when a particular kingdom reaches an impasse? This question coincides with the following: Why is [blank in transcript] inserted? Because: the moment a particular kingdom is present in two forms, it recognizes itself. Man has set the mineral kingdom apart and cannot recognize it; in the second round, the plant kingdom, in the third round, the animal kingdom. But when he can say to himself, “I am,” then he is also able to influence himself through his will. He cannot do this in his sleep. When he can say “I am” to the astral, pranic, mineral, he will recognize them. Because he is a mineral being, he recognizes himself as an ego. In the next round, he will be able to say, “I will and form plastically.” In the sixth round, he will be able to say, “I feel myself,” and he will pour out his entire being in wavy lines, his word. In the seventh round, he pours out his being in such a way that his I blends into the entire earthly sphere. After a trinity has arisen, in which the self exposes itself, a trinity arises as it absorbs it. I am. That is the achievement of the fourth round. If the self understands itself correctly, it must withdraw its own being. The luciferic principle wanted to lead it further. The eighth sphere is what wanted to burst out beyond the point where it had to withdraw. It is in the highest form – self-knowledge. In a sense, the future rounds are what they were in the previous ones, only now each person has their center within themselves. What was automatic before becomes life. Inarticulate sounds, which in the second round resound as the harmony of the spheres, become names. God Himself speaks His name in the first round, and all beings speak it in the last. |

90a. Self-Knowledge and God-Knowledge I: The Feast of the Epiphany (Three Kings)
30 Dec 1904, Berlin Rudolf Steiner |
---|
Before I begin a new chapter, I will, as I said last time, insert something and add something to the Christmas reflection that I gave in the Monday lectures. You remember how I connected the meaning of Christmas with the whole development of our cultural epochs, and how it is precisely through this that Christmas acquires its meaning in the turn of an era, both backwards and forwards. Today I would like to talk about a festival that seems to have less significance for newer peoples than Christmas, about the festival of the “Three Kings,” which is celebrated on January 6, about the festival of the Magi who come from the Orient and greet the newly born Jesus of Nazareth. This festival of epiphanies will become more and more important as people come to understand the true, actual symbolism of this festival as well. We are dealing here with something important. You can see this from the fact that a very developed symbolism underlies this festival of the three Magi from the Orient. This symbolism, like all mysteries, was kept very secret until the fifteenth century, and until then no special hints were given. From the fifteenth century onwards, however, some light is shed on this festival of the Magi from the Orient, in that exoteric illustrations have appeared depicting the Three Holy Kings as a Moor - an inhabitant of Africa - that is Balthasar; then a white man - a European - that is Melchior; and an Asian king who has the skin color of the inhabitants of India - that is Caspar. They bring gold, frankincense and myrrh to the Christ Child in Bethlehem as their offerings. These are three very significant offerings, and that sounds together with the meaningful symbolism of this festival of January 6. Esoterically, however, the festival is a very important one. January 6 is the same date on which the so-called Osiris Festival was celebrated in ancient Egypt, the festival of the rediscovered Osiris. As is well known, Osiris is overcome by his opponent Typhon, he is sought and found by Isis. This rediscovery of Osiris, the son of God, is represented by the festival of January 6. The Feast of the Epiphany is the same festival, only it has become Christian. We also find this festival among the Assyrians, Armenians and Phoenicians. Everywhere it is a festival associated with a kind of general baptism, where rebirth takes place out of the water. This already indicates the connection with the rediscovered Osiris. What is the missing Osiris anyway? The missing Osiris represents the transition that took place between the times before the middle of the Lemurian race and the times after the middle of the Lemurian race. Before the middle of the Lemurian race, there was no man endowed with Manas. It was only in the middle of the Lemurian period that Manas descended and fertilized man. In every single human being, a tomb is created for the Manas, which is divided into humanity, for Osiris, who is depicted as dismembered. So many graves are shown in Egypt - that is the manasic deity, which has been divided and dwells in man. “Tombs of Osiris are the human bodies in the Egyptian secret language. Manas is not liberated until the re-appearing love can liberate Manas. What is the re-appearing love? That which came into being with the Manas fertilization in the middle of the Lemurian period - something before and something after - that was the drawing of the passion principle into humanity. Before that time, there was no actual principle of passion. The animals of the preceding times were cold-blooded. And man himself was not yet endowed with warm blood at that time. Comparatively speaking, the people on the moon were like fish, and the people of the third round were the same warmth with their surroundings. “The Spirit of God brooded over the face of the waters,” says the Bible of this time. The principle of love was not yet within the beings, but outside as manifesting earthly Kama and earthly passion. That is selfish love. The first bringer of love free of selfishness is now Christ, who was to appear in Jesus of Nazareth. Who then are the Magi? They are the Initiates of the three preceding races, the Initiates of Humanity up to the appearance of the Christ Being, of Love free from selfishness, of the resurrected Osiris. The Initiates were beings endowed with Manas, they are Magi. They offer gold, incense, and myrrh as a sacrifice. And why do they appear in the three colors black, white, and yellow? Black as Africans, white as Europeans, yellow as Indians. This is related to the root races. Blacks are the remnants of the Lemurian race, yellows are the remnants of the Atlantean race, and whites are the representatives of the fifth root race, the Aryans. Thus, in the three kings or magi, we have the representatives of the Lemurians, the Atlanteans and the Aryans. They bring three offerings: the European brings gold, the symbol of wisdom and intelligence, which was expressed primarily in the fifth root race. The initiates of the fourth root race, the Atlanteans, have as their offering that which is most important to them. They no longer had a direct connection with the deity, but rather a kind of suggestive influence, something like a universal hypnosis. This connection with the deity is maintained by sacrifice. The feeling must rise so that God also fertilizes the feeling. This finds its symbolic expression in the incense. This is the general symbol for sacrifice, which has something to do with intuition. In esoteric language, myrrh is the symbol of self-denial. What does self-denial mean, what does resurrection mean, as in the example of the resurrected Osiris? I would refer you to Goethe, who says:
Jakob Böhme expresses the same idea with the words:
Myrrh is now the symbol of the dying away of the lower life and the resurrection of the higher life. It is therefore offered by the initiate of the third root race. There is a deep significance in this. Remember who Jesus of Nazareth is. A highly developed chela is born in him. In the thirtieth year of his life, he dedicated his life to the descending Christ, the descending Logos. The Magi foresaw all this. It is a great sacrifice of Jesus of Nazareth that he exchanges his ego with the ego of the Second Logos. This occurs for a very specific reason. Only when the sixth sub-race has been reached will the possibility gradually arise for the human being, the human body, to be ready from early childhood to receive something like the Christ principle. Only in the sixth root race will humanity be so fully mature that the bodies do not need to be prepared and prepared for years, but are capable of receiving the Christ principle from the very beginning. In the fourth sub-race of the fifth root race, the body still had to be prepared for thirty years. This is just as it was in the Nordic regions, where Sig's body was prepared so that Sig could and did make his body available to a higher being. In the sixth root race, it will be possible for man to make his body available to such a high being as Jesus did when founding Christianity. When Christianity was founded, it was still necessary for a chela to sacrifice his ego, to mortify it, to send it up into the astral realm so that the Logos could dwell in the body. This is something that is also illuminated by the last moment on the cross, when you consider the last words: Who else could understand the words:
You will find in this an expression of the fact that it has taken place. At the moment when Christ dies, God has left the body, and the body of Jesus of Nazareth utters those words - the body that was so highly developed that it could express this fact. Therefore, an incredibly great event is expressed in these words. And all this is expressed in the myrrh, which is the symbol of sacrifice, of self-denial, of the sacrifice of the earthly in order to bring forth the higher. In the middle of the Lemurian period, Osiris had to find his grave, Manas had to enter into people. Under the guidance of the magicians, people had to be educated until the Budhi principle, the principle of love, shone forth in Christ Jesus. Budhi is heavenly love. The lower, sexual principle is ennobled by Christian love. Thus the Kama principle has been glorified and purified in the fire of divine love. The fact that we are dealing with Melchior, with the principle of wisdom, the intelligence of the fifth root race, is symbolized by the gold – this expresses the sacrifice. The fact that we are dealing with a principle of cult sacrifice is expressed by the incense. This is the principle of the fourth root race, the Atlanteans. This will then be further developed until Christianity will have fulfilled its task in the sixth root race, which will again have a sacramentalism so that it will fulfill the sensual existence with cultic acts, with sacrificial acts. The sacraments have indeed lost most of their meaning today, the sense for them is no longer there. It will be there again for them through what is symbolized by the incense: the higher human being is born. In the Lemurian race, Osiris finds his death; in the seventh root race, he rises again. So you see that the Feast of the Epiphany, through what it proclaims with its sacrifice, is the story of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth root races. What guides the Magi and where are they led? They are led by a star and are led to a grotto in Bethlehem. This is something that only someone who is familiar with the so-called lower or astral mysteries can truly understand. To be guided by a star means nothing other than to see the soul itself as a star. But when do you see the soul as a star? You see the soul as a star when you can perceive it as a luminous aura. Then the soul is a star. What kind of aura glows in such a way that it can guide? First you have the aura that only glows, that only has a dull light. It cannot guide. Then you have the higher aura, the intelligence aura. It has a fluid light, a swelling light, but it is not yet guiding. But the bright aura, permeated by Budhi, is truly a star, something radiant and guiding. In Christ, the Budhi star, shining in racial development, rises in the progress of humanity. What shines for the Magi is none other than the soul of Christ Himself. The Second Logos Himself shines for them, and He shines above the grotto in Bethlehem. The cave is nothing other than the dwelling of the soul: the body. The astral seer sees the body from the inside. For the astral seer, everything is reversed, and everything is seen in reverse. For example, one sees 365 instead of 563. Thus one sees the human body as a grotto, as a cave, and so the star of Christ, the soul of Christ, shines in the body of Jesus of Nazareth. This is to be imagined as a reality taking place in the astral. It is a process in the lower mysteries. There the Christ-soul actually shines as an auric star, and it leads the initiated of the three races to Jesus in Bethlehem. This is a festival that has been celebrated every year on January 6th. It is one of those hinted at in “Light on the Path”. Each year, a number of festivals take place. This is one of them, in which the star of Bethlehem rises for the wise men. The first four sentences from “Light on the Path” are the center of the four celebrations:
This is the preparation for the fifth round. This sentence appears at the entrance to the temple. And then comes the great fact. The festival of the sixth of January will grow more and more. People will understand more and more what a magician is and what the masters are. Then, from the understanding of Christianity, we will arrive at the understanding of Theosophy. These days, on January 6, the festival of the great Magi, the masters, will also take place among the Theosophists. The New Year is the Feast of the Circumcision of Jesus, because the Christ had not yet been born. The Jewish New Year is in October. But the festival of the circumcision of Jesus of Nazareth has been taken over into Christianity. The fact that Jesus was also a Jew before that is celebrated with the New Year festival in Christianity. [Notes presumably from the answering of questions at the lecture on December 30, 1904] On the next planet, man reaches psychic consciousness, on the following planet, super-psychic consciousness, and on the seventh planet, spiritual consciousness. The adept can artificially place himself in these states of consciousness.
On the devachan plane, one does not feel only one's own pain and suffering, but one can perceive and feel the whole pain of humanity. All other suffering is felt, one is above one's own suffering. Of the levels of consciousness:
The physical body has passed through the seven stages. The astral body will pass through them in the future. Beyond spiritual consciousness stands mastery. Spiritual consciousness is equivalent to chelaship. Esoterically, the conditions that preceded our development on earth are the old lunar and solar conditions. What is now our inner life was once around us. The mystic has within himself what was once spread around him on the outside. The teaching that flowed out of Budhi is called esoteric Buddhism. The consciousness that undergoes 343 stages corresponds to a Pitri development. The planetary chain Physical states of consciousness. Kama was first in the air, it was the passion for the good. Atavism is when one lags behind in earlier stages of development. A distinction is made between states of consciousness, states of life and states of form. An individuality is a being that is fertilized with manas. States of consciousness in planetary development:
The states of consciousness in humans:
The beings have their form from the mineral kingdom. They are a center only in that life becomes conscious. The soul extends into the body. The lower has life only in that the higher is absorbed into it, spreads into it. Consciousness arises from the higher spreading over life and death. Consciousness means as much as Dhyanic. Substance means as much as balance. Beings of consciousness are something all-encompassing – angels of circulation – planetary Dhyanis. Our Earth also has its Dhyani. At the end of the seventh round, the Earth will be so far advanced that plants and animals will be given to man. Consciousness and form are in balance when the form is directed by consciousness. The uncontrolled form strives up to consciousness. Elemental spirits are beings that are more powerful in form than in consciousness and life. The opposite of this are the Dhyanis. The elemental spirits are the inhibiting forces. All parasitic beings are filled with elemental beings, for example mistletoe, then the spider, which spins its matter out of itself. Everything parasitic is an expression of the eighth sphere of the moon. - Nightmare. Sphinx. In the Atlantean race, the Turanians became familiar with the elemental spirits. Consciousness, life and form - every being must pass through these in many times - in seven stages each. States of consciousness:
The seven kingdoms and what is established in them:
Form states:
Life, form and consciousness - the present waking state of the earth. The seven globes - the phase states. We are changing from physical-seeing beings into beings that can also see into the higher realms of being; we are entering the region of permeability. We can now see only a part of the cosmos. When someone says today that a celestial body is visible, it means that it is in the fourth state, in the state of the mineral kingdom. World year - world month - world day. Consciousness corresponds to the sun, form to the moon, life to the earth. There are 7 x 7 = 49 metamorphoses of life that give consciousness. These make up one world year. On the higher level, consciousness is form again. The animals that have the skeleton on the outside belong to the lunar epoch - cancer development. |

90a. Self-Knowledge and God-Knowledge I: Separation into Male and Female
31 Dec 1904, Berlin Rudolf Steiner |
---|
This separation into male and female must be understood in such a way that it had much more significance at the beginning of the Lemurian race than later, when the characters of the male and female were more neutralized. The matter is more profound and is connected with the whole evolution. The two sexes are preceded by a bisexual humanity, in which each individual has both within himself; a hermaphroditic humanity. The oldest gods were always described as having two sexes. We still find it with the ancient Greeks. In the mystery temples there were only hermaphroditic figures. Even the Bible itself still contains a certain awareness of this, in that it suggests the separation of the sexes as the emergence of the two sexes from the bisexual. This is even more evident in the Persian myth. At the time of the separation, all the powers of the human being were still more magical and direct than they are now, so that after the separation we find in the being two powers, separated into man and woman, still magical powers of soul. Those of the masculine must be described as powers more related to the will, and those of the feminine as powers related to the mind and memory. Thus mankind is divided. In Sanskrit, Iccha Shakti is the power more akin to the masculine; Kriya Shakti, that more akin to the feminine. Both powers are not present at all in the original form, in that in further development the female emotional power has become more similar to the male willpower. The hermaphroditic humanity was the vehicle of the very first and most highly evolved Pitris, who were not yet able to incarnate into these gendered races, and therefore had the forces in physical bodies to express the human being in a dual way. These are the great Sons of the Fire Nebula, the Arhats. The best known is Hermes Trismegistus, the Egyptian. You see that these first Arhats grasped the moment when they had a humanity that could achieve the highest, because with the division into male and female, only a one-sided incarnation was possible, and this one-sided incarnation also had the effect that at first a part of the incarnating mature dhyanic natures did not incarnate at all. Only a part – but this was from the outset thrust into a strong one-sided development of humanity, because they could only see half of humanity – was dependent on the leading world powers. It is therefore not surprising that the advanced Pitris refused to incarnate. The consequence was a lower level of humanity next to the Arhats. Now the separation of the human animal and the animal human also arose. The difference was not very great, and the consequence was that humans and animals lived together, that they had sexual intercourse. Thus a certain stretch was continued, which would have come if no manasic fertilization had occurred. What essentially occurred was a deterioration of the low human nature. Thus there was no karma for the Arhats. Only now, because human nature has developed further, was it necessary to bring it higher again. Only in the middle of the sixth root race will humanity be as highly developed as the arhats were at that time, but with the passage through karma. What will be the difference? That the great hermaphrodites were perfect when these human beings reached the summit. But perfect under the direct guidance of God, led by the gods themselves. What comes from these arhats is therefore sacred. What they lack, however, is freedom. It is impossible for them to do evil. The purely humanly created arhats, without the intervention of supernatural powers, have overcome the freedom to do evil through their own strength. What has humanity achieved then? It has absorbed the remaining individuals from the moon, redeemed the luciferic beings. And from this follows that great truth of the kinship of the higher nature of Lucifer with the lower nature of humanity. This truth, that the development of humanity through karma has to be redeemed with the help of humanity, is the basis of Manichaeism, from which sects have always developed since then. These know that people now have to overcome evil through good in order to redeem it. There were sects of Cathars and Waldensians who directly called themselves That is the whole purpose of the development through the Lemurian, Atlantean and Aryan root races. Nothing else is karma than humanity's descent by a step lower than foreseen in the plan of human destiny - to redeem Lucifer, who therefore gave freedom to people. In the male, the will was developed preferentially; it was more of a natural force in the soul. This was initially under the influence of the great hermaphrodites; and it was strictly forbidden for the feminine to participate in cultic acts. By contrast, the soul power developed in the feminine, and if we consider that Lucifer works on the soul through the detour of the humanly inferior, then woman was called upon to absorb the influence of the Luciferian principle. And so humanity is divided between the male nature, which tends towards the strengthening of willpower, and the female nature, which tends towards the thoughtful contemplation of the soul. Through the cruel education of boys, the carnal was killed and the iccha-shakti power was released, which is akin to the rhythmic movements of the universe. Of all this, the calendar is now only a decadent memory. The female education was more concerned with absorbing the whole meaning of the surrounding nature with the soul. Man was almost systematically made into a microcosm at that time. In a kind of somnambulistic dreams, she absorbed nature, all the plastic power, Kriya-Shakti, was there and had an immense effect on the offspring. The masculine and feminine gradually neutralized each other. Thus we see that what religion is, namely a free worship of the divine, came into being under the influence of woman. The men seemed more like divine powers. [...] Cain went into foreign lands and took a wife. This is meant to indicate that he took a female from the bisexual being at all. Cain mixed with something that was already a foreign sex. Adam “recognized his femininity, not another being, self-fertilization, that is how Abel came into being - and of course, Cain as well. Gradually, a contrast emerged between the general human race and that small group that was destined to merge into the Atlantean race. This was, of course, under the influence of women with a tendency towards free religious practice, singing, dancing - a kind of Dionysian cult. The men were fertilized by this soul element of the woman, while the soul element is fertilized by the will element of the man and thus neutralized; hence the striving of human nature towards something higher is always symbolized as a woman. This is how humanity lived at the beginning of the Atlantean race. Only then was the Luciferic principle so strong that in the fourth sub-race it became seduction through black magic, and we have a kind of derailment of humanity. |

90a. (On) Apocalyptic Writings: Lecture I
10 Oct 1904, Berlin Translated by Dorothy S. Osmond Rudolf Steiner |
---|
In the last lecture, I spoke of the stages of man's development at which he becomes capable of speaking of an “apocalypse” and moreover, of proclaiming one himself. I said that the gaze of the seer must range over such vast epochs that he surveys the time before man began to pass through incarnations as an individual, as well as the epochs which preceded these journeys through births and deaths. I also said that before this vision is possible, the Chela (disciple) must have attained the third degree of Chelaship. This also applies to the Apocalypse of St. John. The vision of one who surveys the world in this way does not differ from that of other Initiates. You must realise at the outset that such visions or higher experiences (or whatever they may be called) do not differ from each other. Strange as it may seem to one who is not an initiate, if for example, reference is made to the four Beasts, the account given by one Initiate will not differ from that given by another. Two Initiates will not give different accounts of the same thing. In order to give you a picture, I shall speak of what any Initiate of this degree experiences in regard to the evolutionary path of mankind. The Initiate who communicated what is contained in the Apocalypse, surveyed the epoch which preceded that of our present Root Race, surveyed the two human races preceding our own, surveyed the time when man first assumed his present form in the middle of the Lemurian Race, surveyed too the life that stretches beyond birth and death. Before that point of time in the middle of the Lemurian epoch, the constitution of man was quite different from that of the human being who stands before us today. I will start from a quite definite point. Man of the present day consists, as you know, of seven bodies: the physical body, the etheric body, the astral body, and four others. We are concerned here with the three lower bodies only. There is the physical body which is perceived with the ordinary senses, and then the etheric body which is not perceived by these senses. The etheric body can be perceived by those who have acquired the requisite faculty, by suggesting away the physical body of the human being concerned. They then see in space a “double” of the man. The color of this “double” is more or less that of peach blossom. Embedded as it were in this “double” is the astral body, a shining oval. When a human being dies today, the higher bodies, including the etheric body, rise out of the physical body. During the period immediately following death, the astral body is still united with the etheric body. After a few days the astral body leaves the etheric body and begins to traverse the path it must take between death and a new birth. The position of the etheric body today is only that of a mediator between the activity of the astral body and the physical body. In man's present earthly existence, it is the physical body that is of the greatest significance for him. The physical brain is the instrument for man's highest spiritual activity. The etheric body is the mediator, the connecting link between the activity of the higher bodies and the physical body. There was no dissolving of this connecting link in the first two Races nor in the early part of the third Race. In the so-called Polarian Race (the first Root Race) the etheric body was the most important, Man's whole body at that time consisted of fine etheric substance. Only later did the etheric body densify by permeating itself with physical matter. At the end of the first Root Race, man was not fettered to the ground as he is today. He hovered through the etheric earth, and his organs too, were etheric. He was an etheric being. By the time of Lemuria, through gradual densification, he took on physical corporeality. But even in the middle of the Lemurian epoch, he was not as dense a being as he is today. At the beginning of the third Root Race (Lemurian), matter was just a little denser than that of cloud-formations over mountains today. It was into these “fire-clouds” that men incarnated at that time. Hence the Beings who came as the highest Intelligences from other realms to the earth to be teachers of men, are called “Sons of the Fire-Mist.” When the geologist takes us back to a certain age in the earth's history when physical remains of human beings are no longer to be found, all physical traces are lost. This is because at a certain period man consisted of such fine, rarefied matter that no physical traces exist in the earth's earlier strata. In order to have an expression in our language for the transition from the fine, etheric matter to physical matter, of those beings who developed to physical density, the esotericist speaks of the Eagle stage of man. Physical man in that epoch is called the Eagle. In the language of esotericism, the Eagle is the man of the Lemurian Race who works his way from etheric matter into dense, solid matter. The Lemurian Race is followed by the Atlantean Race. In this Atlantean Race, man was, at first, endowed with a somewhat denser etheric body. At that time he was still able to control the living seed-forces of the plants. By means of the Prana (life-force) of plants he propelled the airships in Atlantis described by Scott-Elliott. This shows us that in that epoch man had greater power over his etheric body (etheric “double”) than he has today. Later on, man will achieve mastery over the still higher bodies. This process which is an actual and real process, is described by the Apocalyptist in detail. The second stage, where man still had mastery over his etheric body is designated by the esoteric expression: the stage of the Lion Man. The Lion Man is a technical expression for the Atlantean. Then comes the man of the Fifth Root Race, the Aryan Race, who is designated by the word “Bull” because it is paramountly the physical forces that come to expression. These three designations: Eagle, Lion, Bull, apply to definite and successive stages of the evolution of Humanity. One who is initiated in certain Mystery Schools learns to understand a certain language and script, in which those who have knowledge of the all-embracing truths express their experiences. It is a language which all Initiates on the earth write and speak, a symbolic language, a symbolic form of speech. Everyone who has learned it, understands it, and when he finds a particular sign in ancient records knows that it has a definite meaning. In the course of some of these lectures, I shall speak of some of these signs, of the most elementary of them. A sign frequently used to designate these stages of human evolution is that of two interlacing triangles which together form a six-sided figure. Below lies a triangle which symbolises the previous conditions. The three angles are not filled; they signify the three original conditions of man. In the middle is the real man. This enduring entity which passes through the incarnations remains through all the stages. That is what is designated as Man. So, here you have the four modes of being through which man becomes man in the course of his evolution. They are indicated in the two interlacing triangles. If you study this sign you will understand why these four Beasts are mentioned whenever an Apocalyptist is speaking about these stages of evolution. They also appear in the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel. In the Apocalypse of St. John they are described in a very special way. An Apocalyptist pierces the veils which separate man from the regions in which he can behold those earlier stages of evolution. Other organs must develop in man before he can really see what has formerly happened on the earth. The stages of evolution through which man has passed and which have become invisible to him, of which he is no longer conscious, must again become living reality to him. Thus in an Apocalyptist the etheric body must have been kindled to life, he must begin actually to see; his whole being must become an “eye.” Therefore the Apocalyptist must be able not only to transfer himself back into the stages of Eagle, of Lion, of Bull, but he must do so as a Seer. And at the third stage of Initiation the Chela actually acquires this power of vision. What I have here described is to be found in the fourth chapter of the Apocalypse of St. John. The Apocalypse describes not only the past stages of human evolution but the future stages as well. To understand these future stages a man must be able, as a seer, to use the forces of the etheric body and of the higher bodies which, in the course of evolution, have fallen into disuse. The man of the Fifth Root Race can only move freely, can only be conscious of himself, in the physical body. But he develops in such a way that later on he can become conscious in the higher bodies. In the present sub-race of the Fifth Root Race we have achieved a very deep development, namely that of the physical intellect. Our present sub-race (the fifth) will be followed by the sixth sub-race and that again by the seventh. That will bring our Fifth Root Race to an end. It will be followed by another, higher Root Race, and that again by another. This evolution therefore consists in the fact that man learns more and more to use his higher bodies. We are moving towards a very definite goal, for we are on the way from the fifth to the Sixth Root Race. Man now uses his physical intellect for everything; he adopts a definite moral teaching, and a religion. This governs him because the physical intellect holds sway. The individual has inevitably to seek his well-being, his happiness, at the expense of others. An individual who strives for higher development endeavors to transcend, to rise above the conditions of everyday life. In occult schools, three words are used to characterise the New Age, the age of the new, later human race. In the domain of communal life, the word is “brotherhood,” brotherly love. That is why the Theosophical Society has taken Universal Brotherhood as the main principle in its declared objects, because it is the aim of the Theosophical Society to make preparations for life in the Sixth Race. Man will then feel happy only when happiness is not acquired, at the expense of others. That is true morality. Our science is materialistic. This will be different in the next sub-race. We are striving for a different form of science, namely for “pneumatology.” Teaching concerning the spirit, the spiritual, will be dominant in the new race. And in the sphere of religion the ruling principle will be something that is not yet possible today, because the intellect lies in the way. Man will himself perceive the existence of a Divine World-Spirit. That is the free religious principle of the next race. Brotherly Love, Pneumatology, Self-Authority in religious matters, these three principles will characterise the future race which is slowly being prepared within our own life. A Seventh Race will take on quite different forms of life, of which we will speak on another occasion. Christianity was born in the fourth sub-race. This sub-race was preceded by the third. In certain time-cycles, what has already transpired, is recapitulated. The first three sub-races recapitulate, briefly, the stages of Eagle, Lion, and Bull. These were preparatory races, whereas the real task of the race emerged in the fourth sub-race, which is designated by the expression Man, or God becomes Man. Christianity arose in the fourth sub-race. The fifth sub-race, our present one, began about the middle of the Middle Ages. It is what we call, speaking in the widest sense, the Germanic sub-race. It separated out from the so-called Latin Race. This term was taken to include everything into which the stream of Christianity flowed and which developed gradually in the spiritual life of Europe. This fourth sub-race was preceded by the three other sub-races in which the earlier were briefly recapitulated. In the Apocalypse, these seven conditions or stages are designated by the seven “Churches” or Communities. The Communities are the representatives of the seven sub-races. The words spoken to the Communities of Ephesus, Smyrna and so on, are directed to the different sub-races. Members of the various races are still living in the world; members of the first sub-race of the Fifth Root Race still survive. The Indian people belong, fundamentally, to this sub-race. The original Indian peoples brought the culture of Thought to expression in the very highest sense. The highest sublimation of Thought came to expression in ancient India. This first sub-race recapitulated, briefly, the development of Lemurian man, who was a man of “feeling.” The members of our present race (Aryan) are men of “thinking.” Memory developed for the first time in Atlantis. The Lemurian had no memory. In the first sub-race (Indian), man did indeed think, but his thinking was a kind of feeling, and what he thought comes to expression in the old Vedic civilisation. You read Vedic literature aright if, as you read, you get the impression that thought is basking in a wonder-world of feeling. In civilisations where memory comes more to the help of the thoughts, where outer customs then retain this memory-culture in the worship of ancient heroes, where the memory of a great inventor, or discoverer, or king is established as a principle of the moral life, where long lists of names and data are compiled; in these civilisations there arose the rudiments of the Calendar. Much was noted down in the early races by the ancient Indians and the Persian Magi. And from these memoranda arose the first beginnings of the Calendar. The men of today have developed from these early sub-races. Man has progressed to the fifth sub-race because he has realised that the Divine is within himself, because he has understood the Apocalyptic progression. But the first sub-race, which becomes articulate in the Vedas, could also most easily succumb to error. Feeling was not yet strong enough to enable Thought to become inward in the real sense. And so in Indian Culture, two aspects are apparent. On the one side we have the sublime ideas of spiritual Divinities contained in ancient Vedic Culture, that wondrous religion, of which those who do not really know it, can form no conception; neither can they form any conception of the profundities of the Vedanta. All this is spiritual teaching of a parity and clarity of which it is said in Europe, and rightly said, that every time one plunges into these depths, having schooled oneself to remain still and tranquil in soul, they are ever and again a source of new wonderment. The wonderment that may be aroused by our modern life fades into nothingness in the face of what ancient Indian Culture has to offer. But on the other side, the Indian peoples lapsed into idolatry in its very crudest form. What is usually to be found in books on ancient Indian Culture is a jumble of ideas of gods and religious conceptions, and gives no true picture. Sharp distinction must be made between the idolatry prevailing among the people and the sublime, majestic spirit-world of the Brahmans. The great light-sides of the life of humanity always have their shadow-sides. Then in whose nation or race there have been individuals of high spiritual development have often themselves persisted in clinging to externalities. In the Letter to the Community of Ephesus, the Apocalypse tries to give a picture of these phenomena. On the one side there are those who have kept their “first love,” and on the other, those who have abandoned the works of their “first love” and have fallen to a lower level. The Nicolaitanes are referred to as those who regard external things as man's one and only goal. Monumental words must be addressed to those who live in such a Community. I wished only to show how events of world importance are touched upon in this passage of the Letter to the Community of Ephesus which stands as the representative of these conditions. Quotation from Rev. 2:1-7: Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write: These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; I know thy works, and thy labors, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil, and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles and are not, and hast found them liars; And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast labored, and hast not fainted. Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent and do the first works, or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of its place, except thou repent. But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitanes, which I also hate. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches, to him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. |

Today we will continue our study of the Apocalypse. Anyone who desires to understand the whole meaning and spirit of a work like the Apocalypse must, above all, have a clear idea of how the religions work, and of how Christianity too worked at the beginning, that is to say, what forces made it possible for Christianity, like the other religious systems, to pour the life of the Spirit in might and glory over mankind. The belief is all too widespread today that plain, simple words, comprehensible to everybody, must contain the truth, and there is a certain disinclination to raise the spirit to the heights of thought, to the heights of super-sensible vision. People are averse to this. We often hear it said, even by theologians, that whatever cannot be clothed in the simplest words which everyone can understand, can be of little service to truth. Anyone who holds this view will be incapable of understanding the meaning and spirit of a work like the Apocalypse or the mystical Gospel of St. John. There is nothing to be said against the justness of the saying that truth must be made known in simple words, for one who would proclaim truth must find ways to speak to the simplest hearts, they must find words in which to speak to those who stand at the heights of science, culture and education, as well as to those who go by the name of the “simple” folk. But the power, the inner force cannot find expression in homely, simple words. This power issues from the supreme heights of spiritual life. Christianity, too, in the early centuries, had Mystery Centers, places of Initiation, where not only simple words, universally comprehensible teachings were given, but the revelations of spiritual vision at its highest level were made known. In the Gospel of St. John this spiritual vision extends to the realms where space and time no longer mean anything. Those who did not participate in the Mysteries were not all of them capable of speaking of these revelations of the highest realms of the spiritual world. Therefore the Church Father or Teacher of the first Christian centuries found popular, simple words through which to find access to the hearts of the unlearned folk. He himself had within him the power, the force belonging to the proclamation from the heights of spiritual life. There is some indication of this in the Apocalypse itself. You only need to read with understanding the most significant passages in the Apocalypse and you will find that what is drawn down from the heights of spirit has been gathered into a great, all-embracing picture of the world. Quotation from Rev. 1:9: “I John, who also am your brother and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day ...” He says that he was on the island of Patmos, meaning a place of initiation, and received this revelation. And he had received it “in the spirit.” In other places he speaks a little differently. At the beginning of the fourth chapter, he says, “After this I looked, and behold a door was opened in heaven, and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me, which said, “Come up hither and I will show thee things which must be hereafter ...” The first three chapters contain the gist of what I tried to convey briefly in the last lecture. But then comes a description of the destiny of the Root Race which will follow our own. That is why the Apocalypse makes a clear distinction between the two kinds of vision, Inspiration and Intuition. A lower form of Intuition suffices when it is a matter of making known the destiny of a former Root Race, but a higher form of Intuition is necessary in order to see what will come to pass after our own Root Race, for example, during the sixth and seventh Root Races. This lies beyond the range of the vision upon which the first three chapters are based and can only be revealed to the seer when he ascends to Devachan. The destiny of a Root Race never unrolls before us in the region of astral vision, however highly developed. Therefore the Apocalyptist says that he heard the voice “in the spirit.” Up to the end of the third chapter of the Apocalypse, we have to do with higher astral vision; from the fourth chapter onwards, with Devachanic vision. The Initiates of all epochs speak as St. John, the writer of the Apocalypse speaks. But the Apocalypse of St. John differs in one respect from other profound writings of Initiates. The standpoint is different. The theologian, John, speaks in the Apocalypse as a Christian, from the Christian standpoint. Therefore anyone who desires to read the Apocalypse with true insight, with right feeling, must steep himself not merely in the theological but in the human attitude and feeling of a deeply initiated Christian who has himself experienced the full power of the Christian revelation. A significant saying is to be found in the first Epistle of St. John. Quotation from I John 5:7,8: “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the word and the Holy Ghost ... And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, the water and the blood ...” The three principles that “bear record in heaven” are known to the theosophist as Atma, Buddhi and Manas. The Christian calls the three principles which underlie the world: Father, Word and Holy Spirit. A Christian of the first centuries would have refrained from speaking of the Father. “No one cometh to the Father save through Me.” These words were uttered by the great Christian Master Himself, by Him through Whom Christianity itself came into the world. I am now speaking entirely in the sense in which an initiated Christian of the first period of Christianity would have spoken. He believed in the Father and he believed that he could come to know the Father only through the Word. And what was the Word? It is only possible to convey to the non-initiate a feeble idea of what an initiated Christian of the first centuries called the “Word” and even then, it can be done only by means of a comparison. The highest to which man can raise himself, is the Thought. Man raises himself through Thoughts to life in Devachan. He lives in Devachan. Only, he is not conscious of it. The characteristic of earthly man is that he lives simultaneously in three worlds: the physical world, the astral world, and the Devachanic world. But he is conscious of himself only in the physical world. The highest manifestation which can exist in the world was for all religions, and also for Christianity in its earliest form, the world-creative Will. And when the Christian says anything at all about the Father, It is always in the sense that the Father is the world-creative, universal Will. When man desires to bring the highest that is in him, the Devachanic, the Thought, to expression through the Will, that is, through the world-creative principle, then this is done, in the first place, through Speech. The Word is, in man, the announcer of the Spirit through the Will. And so the early Christian said: everything that constitutes our world is apprehended in the highest sense through the Word, but now through the Word that has come into being through the Highest, world-creative Will, just as man brings the highest that is in him to expression in the words, through the power of will. And so the Christian said, “The Father brought His Spirit, the Holy Spirit, to expression through the power of the WORD.” Hence it is written in the Gospel, “All things were made by the Word, and without the Word was not anything made that was made.” The Third Person is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the same for the Cosmic All as the spirit of the individual man is for man. The Spirit descends in the Cosmic Word. If the Christian wanted to picture this to himself, he said, “Just as when a man speaks, his words sound forth into the air setting the air into wave-movement, and his thought lives further in the waves of the air, just as the word is the embodiment of the human spirit, so is the world the embodiment of the Divine Word.” Everything was made through the Word and without the Word nothing was made that was made. Therewith it is affirmed that the essential, basic principle is the highest that man can see embodied in the world. This is the Word, and this Word is designated as the Second Divine Person, or as the Son of God, as the Highest Being, not as an abstract image of the World-soul conceived in a pantheistic sense, but as a Being far more personal and individual than the human personality, the human individuality. It must be firmly held in mind that “the Word” is an expression for the Highest Being, through Whom the entire universe works, just as man can see with eyes, hear with ears, apprehend with the intellect. That Being, for the early Christians, became Man, in Him Whom they recognised as the Proclaimer of the Gospel. Thus for the early Christians, the Event in Palestine was of cosmic significance. He Who walked in Palestine was, for the first Christians, not a man as other men. For them He was the Word made Flesh, the One Who in the great Universe can be seen with eyes, heard with ears, grasped with the understanding, and this infinite Being had come in the form of a man. Whoever does not apprehend this, whoever tries to twist the meaning of the God made Flesh, this Word which is the God become Flesh, whoever does not hold the view that here was the Incarnation of God in Jesus, cannot really understand the mind and thought of the first Christians. He was in very truth a unique Personality. The Gospel expresses this, too, in a glorious, most powerful way. For those who can read aright, the Gospel clearly indicates the fact that the Christian Initiate ascended to Devachanic vision. In order fully to understand Christianity, however, I beg you to consider the following. In the narrative of the life of Jesus and of the life of Buddha there is great similarity. This similarity in the Annunciation, in the years of teaching, and so forth, has often been stressed. The mystic understands the reason for this similarity because he knows that such a life repeats itself in certain epochs of human evolution. But in the Christ life there is something else something essentially different from the Buddha-life, and the first Christian Initiates understood this. If you follow the life of Jesus, you come to the event described as the Transfiguration. Jesus went with His disciples Peter, John and James to the mountain and was transfigured; He was illumined from within, and Moses and Elias appeared on either side of Him. The disciples then received significant revelations. This is an indication of a moment of supreme importance. Moses and Elias appear on either side of Christ Jesus. Time is transcended, the Past has become Present. So it is in Devachan. In the physical world we have space and time. In the astral world we have only time. In the Devachanic world, however, there is no time, no space. Moses and Elias, long since passed away, are immediately present. This means, therefore, that at the Transfiguration the three disciples, Peter, James and John were transported into the state of Devachanic vision. Following the Transfiguration we first come to what is significant. It is the actual sacrificial death, the suffering, the dying, which do not occur in the life of Buddha. Buddha went out with his disciple Ananda and became Illumined. When the scene is described in the life of Buddha it is given a different form, adapted to the understanding of the people. The Transfiguration, however, comes at the end of Buddha's life, whereas the really significant epoch in the life of Jesus begins with this event. Therewith is indicated Christ's teaching concerning all the old religious systems of the previous sub-races of the Fifth Root Race. Christ wished to say, “We understand the prophecies, the previous proclamations in the old religious systems of what the Gospel now proclaims, we recognise that in the ancient Mysteries the word of truth was taught and revealed.” But one thing has become reality through Christianity. And that is expressed by the words: Blessed are they who do not see and yet believe. This epitomizes the great, world-historic significance of Christianity in its Gospel. What was formerly attained through Initiation by a few chosen ones in the seclusion of the Mystery-Temples, attained through vision of the great cosmic truths within the hidden crypts of the Mystery-Centers, could now be attained by those who had not actual vision but who were able to believe with inner freedom of soul. Therefore, what formerly took place in concealment, in the seclusion of the Mysteries, the supreme Mystery wherein man himself goes through the gate of death in order to rise again in a higher life, this deepest of all Mystery-secrets which a non-initiate cannot understand in its true significance, this was enacted on the great stage of outer world-existence. What came to pass in Palestine, came to pass as actual, historic fact, following in every detail the sacred acts which had formerly taken place in Mystery-rites. The rites of sacrifice and the sacrificial death were constantly repeated, in the Mysteries. But the old Mystery-teachings had to be presented to the world, in a more popular form. Therewith a further step was achieved through Christianity, a step forward, in the understanding of an early Christian Initiate, a step which leads man beyond the stage to which the old religions could have led him. Who were the old religious Teachers? They were Teachers of mankind. What they taught, that was the important thing. It was the actual teachings of Buddha, Zoroaster, Confucius, Hermes, Pythagoras, Lao-tze, it was the words themselves that were all important. These Teachers stood as it were on high mountain and from there proclaimed the Most Holy Word. But something else was possible. The WORD Itself descended and took on human form. Henceforward it was not a question of what was proclaimed, but what was lived, lived in the very deepest sense. The goal was fulfilled. In ancient times the path for our Fifth Root Race was outlined. The teachings and commandments, the truths given by the old founders of religions, Lao-tze, Confucius, Moses, Buddha, were given for this purpose. But the WORD Itself came down in fleshly form and lived among us. The Threefold utterance became reality: I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. The Christian Initiate indicated what I have said in words of great profundity. All the Founders of ancient religions were regarded as embodied Angels, messengers of the Godhead. “Angel” means the Messenger of the Godhead. But now there came One before Whom the Angels veiled their countenances in veneration and laid themselves at the feet of the Mystical Lamb, at the feet of the God made Flesh. The Mystery is that the Lamb Who became flesh denoted a deeper descent into humanity, a life among men. The earlier Teachers had proclaimed the Word from the mountain top. But Christ came down into the valley, lived as Man among men. He did not command what is to be done; He did not merely proclaim truths but in his very life He made manifest the Word. For the Christians, this was what distinguished his religion from the other religions. This was what brought him to the core and center of what the Christian Initiate proclaims as the Apocalypse, or the secret revelation. We will speak next time of why the Word made Flesh was also called the Lamb. It will have become clear to us that the Lamb must be regarded as the central figure in the Apocalypse, and that only through the Lamb can the future of Humanity be made known. In the 4th chapter of the Apocalypse, where the man is led out, where the heaven opens, the truths of the higher world are announced to him. It is the Mystical Lamb Who opens the Seals of the World. Here is encountered the now transfigured Flesh. Hence the question: What is revealed to a man who has passed beyond the heights of Christian astral vision? The Mystical Lamb is revealed to him. The Devachanic world lies open before him and then he is able to unveil the innermost secret which must be revealed when the time is fulfilled, i. e., when the 7th sub-race of our Fifth Root Race is completed and a new race of mankind, together with a new stage of evolution is at hand. Thus we have in the Apocalypse a description of the Destiny of the 5th sub-race and of the beginnings of a new configuration of the world, characterised by the words: Pneumatology, Communal life based on love, Morality. This world is announced in the secret that is revealed through the opening of the seven seals, revealed through Him Who made the fulfilment of this secret possible, in that He came among men. And He will fulfil it when the time is ripe, when our Root Race has become ready to pass over into that world and to attain the stage of evolution designated by these three words: Pneumatology, Communal life based on love, Morality. Such are the depths from which the content of the Apocalypse must be drawn. This does not imply that true Christianity can be drawn only from these depths. But true Christianity must be permeated by fire, and man can only kindle this fire in himself when he draws its force from higher vision. In Christianity, the fruit of this higher vision is the Apocalypse. |

Before I go further in the explanation of apocalyptic writings, I must again repeat that this explanation can be of real value only to those who have been in the Theosophical Movement for a considerable time and who approach the theosophical view of the world with a certain sympathetic understanding. A great deal will have to be said here that may well cause opponents to attribute all kinds of fantastic things to Theosophy, and which, to begin with, will be regarded by rationalistic thinkers as so much brain-spinning. Familiarity with the nature of theosophical thought and feeling is essential if what is said in connection with the Apocalypse is not to be misunderstood. What I have said about the relation of Christianity to Jesus [the] Christ and about the relation of the writer of the Apocalypse to Jesus must be kept firmly in mind if we are to understand what follows. The keystone for a true understanding of the place of Christianity in the world lies in the saying: Blessed are those who believe even though they do not see. As I have already said, the significance of this utterance lies in the fact that what formerly took place in the deep secrecy of the Mystery-Temples was carried through Christianity on to the great arena of the world. “This does not gainsay in the very slightest the historic actuality of the happenings in Palestine between the years 1 and 33 A.D. The standpoint of those who see to the root of these things will far rather be that the familiar Christian tradition is historic truth. In this respect, therefore, Theosophy is in agreement at every point with what Christians believe. But the historic fact at the beginning of our time-reckoning is something else as well, and we understand it rightly when we think of it as a mystical fact, when we realise that the way of the Passion, the Death, the Resurrection, the Ascension, are historic happenings which were formerly enacted in the Mysteries. There is a word in the Bible which indicates how the ancient mystery is related to its own fulfilment, to Christianity. In Christianity, everything that pointed to Christ before His actual appearance is called: the Promise. Those who understand these things know that “Promise” means nothing else than that what took place in Palestine had been “Promised” in the secrecy of the Mysteries. We can understand it from the very words of ancient scripts. Think only of the Mysteries of Greece. What was enacted in those Mysteries, in deep secrecy, and experienced only by the Initiates, was the Passion, Dying and Resurrection of the “Son of God.” They experienced it through the preparation they had undergone, through their training on higher planes. Thus in the Mysteries the Initiate beheld the Passion, the Dying and the Resurrection of the Son of God. This was portrayed before their eyes of spirit. That is the Promise. And then this Promise was fulfilled—in Palestine. This is the explanation of the utterance: blessed not only are those who were seers in the Mysteries, but also those who are able to believe not merely in the Word revealed to the Mystics, but in the Word made Flesh. That is the meaning of this utterance. It is from this point of view that we must understand the relation in which John the Apocalyptist stands to the Mysteries of antiquity and to the Christian Mystery. Light will then be thrown on many a passage. It is said in the Apocalypse that seven seals are opened. What does the opening of seals mean, in the language in which the Apocalypse is written? Since time immemorial, the secret of the Sons of God becoming man was announced prophetically to the mystics. And in the language of the Apocalypse, the presentation of this secret on the physical plane is called the opening of a seal. In the language of occultism, the opening of a seal means nothing else than the proclamation of something that was formerly made known only to the Initiates and presented only within the Mysteries. The picture given is correct in its very details. What is later revealed was in earlier times beheld within the Mysteries. During the time of the Mysteries there was no book which recorded what happened in the Mysteries. This came only later. Such a book is the Gospel. The Gospel contains what was formerly presented in the Mysteries, and what is written there is “unsealed” for those who are ready for it. And who will be ready? Here is something that you must grasp in its whole setting in the Apocalypse. Something is proclaimed to seven Communities. You have heard that these seven Communities are representatives of the seven sub-races of the Fifth Root Race. Who, then, are the Proclaimers? And who are those to whom the proclamation is made? Here we must think from the esoteric point of view of the appearance of Christ as compared with other appearances. (If you have read the last number of the magazine “Lucifer” you will there find something that I will now briefly repeat.) The evolution of mankind stands under the direction of mighty Leaders who guide its onward progress. In the language of esotericism these Leaders are called Manus. A Manu, therefore, is the Being who at the beginning of a race gives the great impulse, the direction in which the race is to evolve. We are living now in the Fifth Root Race. When, after the destruction of the Fourth Root Race (the Atlantean) this Fifth Root Race began its development, the great impulse was given by the Manu of the Fifth Root Race. The Manu is not in the same sense a man among men as other outstanding human individualities. Even before mankind on the earth was filled with spirit, the Manu had already reached a lofty stage of development. It was in the Third Root Race, when in the middle of the Lemurian epoch the human spirit flashed up for the first time in the human body, that such leaders came to the human race. When men were young, when they were still children, they could not lead themselves. But their leaders were not of the same nature as themselves. These Beings who had already reached a higher stage of development in an evolution that is not that of man, were so advanced, that they could be leaders of the human race before the spirit had incarnated in the bodies of men. These were superhuman Beings. These superhuman beings are of two kinds. The one kind, who were already leaders at the time when, in respect of the Spiritual, men were still children, these Beings had already advanced so far that they had reached a stage which will be reached by humanity only in the far distant future. These highly developed individualities, the Manus, are called in the language of esotericism, “the Holy Spirits.” The second category of Beings were already nearer to man's level, but still superhuman. They are called, “Sons of God.” And the next group of individualities were those who were already men among men. If we go back to the middle of the Lemurian epoch and survey man's whole evolution, we find three grades of individualities who have something to do with humanity. There is a group of very lofty individualities who long, long ago, in the far past, had already passed through the stages of evolution which man will attain only in the distant future. They are the “Holy Spirits.” A second group are the “Sons of God.” They stand nearer to man but are nevertheless far more exalted than he. And the third group are those who, as human beings were still children, but were nevertheless the most advanced among those early men. They are the “Fathers” or “Pitris.” We have therefore three grades of beings and these three grades of beings are the guides and leaders of mankind. If we now go back once again to the beginning of the Fifth Root Race, we find the superhuman Manu, by whom the great impulse was given. But in the course of the Fifth Root Race, something very significant comes to pass, namely that in the course of the Fifth Root Race, men themselves progress so far that a few of them will be able to take into their hands the spiritual guidance of the human race. Those whom we call “Fathers” or “Elders,” will then be able to guide and lead men as formerly they were led by the superhuman Beings. Thus the guidance and leadership of mankind passes over from the Manus to those who are “Human Brothers,” “Brothers of Men.” The Holy Spirits, the Sons of God, the Fathers, become the leaders of the human race in the successive epochs of time. The “Fathers” are also called “Elders.” When the Word took on human form, so says the writer of the Apocalypse, this Word, the Logos, took on human form as the “Son,” just as formerly the Word took on human form as a Spirit, or since Christian esotericism calls the Spirit “Angel,” before the Word became Flesh, the Word was an “Angel.” This is Christian esotericism. First, the Word or the Logos is an Angel, then the Word became Flesh as Son, and then the Word will become “Elder” or “Father.” These are the successive stages. The Christian Initiates have always understood this. But their words must be rightly understood. Paul, one of the greatest Christian Initiates, could only hint at these profound secrets. But he gave an indication of what I have just been saying. When the Word was still an Angel, the Word was still on the super-sensible plane. The Word is spoken from out of the clouds, from the super-sensible, when Commandments are proclaimed. The age of the “Law” is the age of the “Promise.” The time of the Law was when the Word was an Angel. Then the Word became Flesh and later on the Word will become “Elder” or “Father.” Paul was an Initiate, and proclaimed this in the Epistle to the Galatians in the following words:
Other passages, too, indicate that the Word was an Angel, but subsequently became Flesh. What happened through the Word becoming Flesh? It was proclaimed to the sub-races of the Fifth Root Race how they should develop on into the future. In the Letters to the seven Communities, the author of the Apocalypse indicates how evolution proceeds. Not all human beings reach the goal, not all those who have entered into this evolutionary process reach the goal in the due time. Something very significant comes to pass. In order to understand it aright, let us ask: How does the writer of the Apocalypse help us to understand the Fathers, the Elders? Do we find the Elders themselves in the Gospel? Yes, they are there at the time when the Angel has become the Son. At that time the Fathers are not yet ready to receive the Word into themselves. They must wait for a future time. In the age of the Promise, the Fathers have not progressed sufficiently. They will understand the Word only at the end of the Fifth Root Race, when within themselves as Fathers, they will understand what remained hidden from them at the time when Christ, their Master, was on earth. The twelve Disciples are Elders. They are destined again to come into the presence of Christ. Then, at the end of the Fifth Root Race, the Book that was given to them sealed, will be unsealed. Again something of particular significance comes to pass in evolution. We are told what conditions will be when the Fifth Root Race has progressed, to the point where it must be decided whether the time has come for the transition into the Sixth Root Race. I shall merely indicate things upon which I will speak more fully in later lectures. The coming of the Sixth Root Race is announced by the sounding of trumpets. Quote from Rev. IV;12 “And the fourth Angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third, part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.” This refers to the third part that has remained behind, which however, need not have happened. The Letters to the Communities contain not only warnings and admonitions but also sharp reproof. Not all reach the goal. A third part (of humanity) falls away completely from evolution. We have therefore one third which will attain the goal, one third which lags behind, and one third which does not reach the goal and falls completely away. One third attains its goal, a second third will only later attain its goal, making together two thirds; and at the end of the Fifth Root Race, only one third of those who began evolution will have reached the necessary stage of development. Seventy-two Elders were called upon to enter into evolution and to develop to further stages. The admonitions to the Communities which it devolved upon the Elders to lead, indicates that only a third reach the goal. If we take a third of 72 Elders, we have 24 Elders who will still be there when the seven seals of the Book are opened. This revelation of God's majesty is something which was proclaimed, by the appearance of Christ. Quote from Rev. IV: “After this I looked and behold, a door was opened in heaven, and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, “Come up hither and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.” And immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone, and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. And round about the throne were four and twenty seats, and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment, and they had on their heads crowns of gold. And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices, and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal, and in the midst of the throne were four beasts full of eyes before and behind. And the first beast was like a lion and the second beast like a calf and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle. And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within, and they rest not day and night, saying Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty which was and is and is to come. And when those beasts gave glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever, the four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever and cast their crowns before the throne saying, “Thou are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and Power, for thou hast created all things and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” This is the future stage of evolution when those who have overcome will have become Fathers in the true sense. I said that what once took place, in the deep secrecy of the Mysteries will, in later times, be unsealed. I have told you that Christ's appearance on earth was presented in the Greek Mysteries. What was then a secret was unveiled through the appearance of Christ. We could have gone into the Greek Mysteries and we should there have beheld the Passion, Death, Resurrection and Ascension. The seven seals belong to the future. If a mystery is also proclaimed then, it will again be a mystery of which the seal belongs to a still later future. As far as this is possible, I will tell you of a mystery that has been celebrated ever since the time of the ancient Indian Rishis and is of deepest significance. I will try to render it in the following way, in symbolism. There is a horse, with the front foot raised. Upon this horse sits a divine figure with a bow. The figure gives a sign and the horse tramples a serpent on the head with its foot. This is the horse Kalki. This signifies that everything of a lower nature falls away, that there will come a future when the Son of the Gods, he who sits upon the horse, will come and who, as king adorned with the crown, will bring the revelation of what is hidden in the book with the seven seals. This is a mystery that is everywhere to be found. I have only been able to indicate it in an entirely external way. But today it is still a mystery that can be experienced and beheld only by an Apocalyptist, but in the future times will be unveiled within us, just as John has revealed and written down for us the unsealing of the old world. Then we shall realise that it points to the time when the Elders, the Fathers, receive the revelation of what underlies this mystery and is revealed at its unsealing. Quote from Rev. VI:1-3 “And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals; and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, come and see. And I saw, and beheld a white horse, and he that sat on him had a bow, and a crown was given unto him, and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, come and see.” This is repeated four times. The unsealing of the mystery of the Fathers, as it is contained in Christianity, is of all words spoken in the Mysteries, the most significant. Whence comes man? Whither does his development lead? From the Father to the Father. This is revealed through the Mediator. “No one cometh to the Father save through me.” The whole of world evolution, that of the past and that of the future, actually comes to expression in the Apocalypse. Even these indications are of the most elementary kind. We must first be able to employ the words of the Apocalypse in their true meaning. We shall learn more and more from them. Today I only wanted to call forth a feeling that by steeping oneself in this work, one realises that its depths are inexhaustible. Of this I can assure you: The Apocalypse is one of those writings in the face of which we learn true humility, true piety and through which we learn what the Indian esotericist calls Faith (Glauben). There is an experience which imparts this Faith to us in the deepest sense, and it is the following: After we have made efforts to understand such a writing, we believe, to begin with, that we know a little about it. But when we try to go into it still more deeply, as deeply as our powers allow, we find that our earlier interpretation was utterly childish. We realise that only now do we rightly understand what is said. And having done this and after a lapse of time again take up the book, the same experience is repeated. When this has happened several times, Shradda (Faith) comes to us. We steep ourselves again and again in such a writing, finding in it ever greater depths. That is the inexhaustible fount of such writings, which we can read with unshakable confidence but can never come to an end of their meaning. This is at the same time an urge to be humble in our attitude towards such writings, to delve into them more and more deeply. It will be clear to us then that if a really profound explanation seems to have been found, it will become ever more profound, in time to come. From this springs the consciousness that the greatest treasures given to man do not stem from human imperfection but from divine perfection, for this is verily divine wisdom, revelation of divine wisdom. Documents of wisdom are given to us in these books. Our understanding of them is still feeble, for these writings come to us, not from men, not from below, but from above, through the Gods. We have to develop to their heights. This gives the esotericist a feeling of the truth of words which must become part of his very life, must be his guiding maxim, and which must permeate theosophists ever more deeply. For it is not dogmatic knowledge, not doctrinal knowledge, that makes a man a theosophist, but the fact that he is steeped through and through with the wisdom of this utterance, that his whole attitude of mind and feeling is filled with the wisdom which it contains: The Highest—it is given from the Primal Beginning; The Highest—it will be understood through man at the end of the days. |

Human kama was very closely related to general kama. It had not yet become separate. We understand what warm-blooded kama actually means when we look for the opposite pole, because in nature everything arises in polarity. |
It is only from the third race onwards that three Logoi are recognized. Under this influence, the Indian Trinity was also formed. The child is personified for the first time in Horus. The personal is now possible, in which Christ immerses himself. God appears under the mask of man. The Trinity becomes the three persons. In the fifth sub-race, everyone wants to decide for themselves, the poly-personality asserts itself, the culmination of which takes place in the French Revolution. |
90b. Self-Knowledge and God-Knowledge II: On the Root-Races of Atlantians and Aryans
01 Jan 1905, Berlin Rudolf Steiner |
---|
The primary task of the fourth race was to develop the inner self. Before that, people had lived very generally. Human kama was very closely related to general kama. It had not yet become separate. We understand what warm-blooded kama actually means when we look for the opposite pole, because in nature everything arises in polarity. While the Kama for the human being - in the middle of the Lemurian race - was separating, something else had to arise in the world; this other is the natural fire, the fire in the world. The two are therefore in an occult connection, and the misuse of Kama in man meant a disturbance in the fiery element of the earth. For the relationship was a much closer one than it is now, when the separation is complete. Just as people were still able to control fire through their Kama, to draw fire out of stone, they could misuse fire to destroy themselves. The downfall of Lemuria was caused by the misuse of fire in its connection with the kamic element. Sin meant much more then than it did later. When the Kama had become more and more isolated, resulting in a soul that was more and more withdrawn into itself, the Atlantean race emerged. But the prana was still in the same context, and the Atlanteans were able to use this power, were able to apply the germinating power to industrial endeavors. The first races, the Rmoahals and the Tlavatlis, still possessed the magic word, the mantra-like sounds developed by the Lemurians, which had a direct effect on the forces of life. When language came more to the fore, knowledge of the magic word was gradually lost. During the Toltec race, it had less and less effect on the outside world. However, some retained it as an art. In the past, people paid less attention to this control over life. Now some wanted to systematize this, and in a sense they also obtained mastery over death. The patriarchal age known to us from the Bible is based on the art of prolonging human life to an extraordinary degree. This thus became an art; and in the case of the fourth, the Turanian sub-race, it led to a terrible black magic, inasmuch as life has an occult connection with everything that is an aqueous element. It was this source material that the Atlanteans used to gain such high mastery over; they had the same power over it as the Lemurians had over fire, and in this way their downfall was also brought about by water. There is a deep macrocosmic connection between nature and man. Thus, the fauna and flora are also different depending on the root races and sub-races. For example, in the case of the fourth sub-race of the Aryans - in which the ideal, Romanesque Christianity arose - the fauna and flora that still remained corresponded to those countries. The materialistic Germanic race, in turn, has its own. Appearance depends on what a person develops within themselves. Today, people are not yet aware of this; they control nothing but what their minds control. During the sixth sub-race, however, they will learn again to control the power of life; during the seventh, they will learn to control fire, the inner fire, the kundalini fire, which only the adept now controls. During the fifth sub-race of the Atlanteans, the pre-Semitic one, the mind had been established, as we know, through the former branching of certain animals, the ungulates, the horse. The capacity for logic, for combination, for personal right-mindedness arises; personal conflict arises, arises, arising from the opposition of convictions and opinions; the special being that finds its external expression in the fifth, the Aryan root race. This is a necessary point of passage; but it is natural that this will also lead to the downfall of the fifth root race. Through the war of all against all, the Aryans will perish, as once the Atlanteans perished through water and the Lemurians through fire. Man was not yet able to guide this intellect himself, so the leading Manu was still a supermundane one. The group that was led into the Gobi and Shamo deserts was now singled out, namely by the Ursemites. Above all, this group was to have pure bodies, so that a selected plant diet was ordered by the Manu. This is the origin of the decadent food laws that still remain. But the Manu's intention was, above all, to leave people free – to leave them to the influence of a luciferically educated priesthood. That is why only a small group remained faithful, while the others fell away. This is why the stages of development are so different. The Master differs from all other leading forces of humanity in that he reaches the highest development in the same way, only faster. When the Masters are openly acknowledged as the leaders of humanity, the sixth sub-race will emerge. The seventh sub-race will actually perish. On the other hand, the small group of ‹Homines religioses› will be gathered into the sixth sub-race, which will have the necessary temperament in its blood. The small group that remained faithful was the foundation for the Aryan race; hence the wonderful, pure, brilliantly spiritual teaching of the Indian sub-race that moved south. The uniformly divine is recognized and worshipped. Through the mind, which reaches up to Devachan, the Devas were first recognized and worshiped. The Vedas are only later formations; they originated at the time when the third sub-race was already present. Of the original Rishi religion there are only traditions. It is a repetition of what the Lemurians still instinctively felt; the unified religion is here relived with the mind. The dualistic [religion], with the separation into good and evil, was a repetition of what had been experienced by the Atlanteans and was relived in the consciousness of the Persians. In the third sub-race, the result of the monistic and dualistic religions emerges: the Trinity - the service of Osiris and Mithras. Liberty, equality, fraternity are the guiding abstract ideas that replace the gods. |

Thus we may say that man is built according to his body from elemental, underground spirits. They have gradually formed the bodies of minerals, plants, animals and humans to the point where he is glowing from the planetary [gap in the transcript] spirit. Only at the end of his development will he be spirit or logos. We must also understand other characteristic features. We can characterize the elemental beings by saying that they have will, mind and thought in a single center. |

If we follow the entire development of man, we will remember that initially we are dealing with Pitris, who come from the lunar epoch, because the Pitris are the actual people who came over in the seed and form the disposition to the earth. They have already shed the three realms, and we are dealing with moon Pitris. That is the first factor. The second is where the Pitri are to incarnate, which comes from the earth itself, because the lunar forms are gone. There is a second current that must connect with the first. And the third is the one that came during the Lemurian epoch as manasic fertilization. The soul comes from the moon, the body from the earth, it is formed from the earth. And the spirit comes from above as a divine impact. Thus the three limbs are composed. These three currents are the representatives of three entities: 1. Human entity [gap in transcript] Three groups, from which the body is built, we call elemental spirits. If we study all the elemental spirits that create in our evolution and ask, “What do you want?” there is no sense in it. For the common spirit has the will, the elemental spirit is the doer. Likewise, it has a common consciousness - you cannot ask, “What do you feel?” Like the hand in humans. Therefore, the activity of the elemental spirits appears in the form of necessary natural laws. They appear to be without feeling and will as necessities because consciousness is at the center of the whole macrocosm. Now we come to the sidereal entities. When they have reached the highest level, they have their feelings for themselves and their thoughts for themselves, but not yet their will for themselves. When man has arrived at the end of the earth's development as a planetary Logos, he will be able to think and feel everything, but not to will. That will only come when he has spiritualized the next three planets. Then we are all-feeling and all-willing beings, but not yet all-powerful beings. However, the human being is now gradually acquiring will. The will element is what gradually emerges and has been developing freedom since the middle of the Lemurian period. An elemental being is not free, neither in relation to [gap in the transcript] plan. The Logos is free in relation to his thoughts when he has reached the highest point, and in relation to feeling; and a divine spirit being is free in relation to thought, feeling and will. This also explains why Christian esotericism does not ascribe free will to man, only to man to a limited extent. Angels carry out the will of God, are messengers. They see that thought and feeling are in balance in the mid [gap in transcript] sidereal beings. The two are not yet mastered by the will, therefore still in conflict; They will bring them into full harmony through the will on the next planet. So that these planetary spirits in particular, which enter our earth, maintain balance in thought and feeling, thus still fluctuating back and forth, are not yet stable – hence Kama-Manas. The third degree of divine beings has stable equilibrium through the will that holds them in balance. If you follow this, you will say to yourself: At the beginning of the first planet, we only see elementary beings at work, because the Pitris are still children. Then, in the middle of planetary development, the influence of the sidereal beings begins and continues, and from the middle to the end, the influence of the divine beings sets in. From the beginning, therefore, we have only one center consciousness for the planetary cosmos; then a sidereal consciousness begins to develop, and then a heavenly one. In the beginning one is conscious, and at the end all partake of the consciousness of the one; in the beginning unity consciousness, in the end multiplicity consciousness. Now, we call the end product of such a being, endowed with consciousness, “Atm”. And the unity consciousness in the beginning we call “Ishwar”, so that we have to imagine the whole evolution as a transition from the unity consciousness, the Ishwara, to the unity consciousness of the <“Atwar”. He keeps giving until symphony is achieved. If you now imagine the development, you have to say to yourself: We are dealing with an undivided Ishwara consciousness at the beginning, which has divided somewhere until the dull ego consciousnesses emerge. This point is esoterically and astrologically referred to as Libra. So you can say: The esoteric meaning of the statue of Libra is the emergence of Atma from Ishwara. And now an important moment in evolution occurs: that the being from which the I emerged is a duality; for it is, after all, a macrocosmic being. The microcosm is the Atma embryo and the macrocosm is what acts from the outside as Ishwara consciousness. So, after the constellation of Libra, where they then diverge, you have the duality: the virginal soul, Virgo, and what comes in from outside, the powerful. This can also be called will, Leo. And now we have already reached the point where Leo and Virgo, which previously only asserted themselves in the natural kingdoms, gradually come together in man, the hermaphroditic human being, Gemini. Of course, between Leo and Virgo and Gemini, the reversal must take place; what was on the outside must come inside, that is what Cancer means. We have now assessed it in the hermaphroditic human being, the duality that is now emerging on the other side. What used to be higher nature becomes lower nature: Taurus. And now the ascent begins again, it goes up to Aries. What was lower nature becomes the representative of justice - the Jason saga. The next thing is that justice does not remain external, but takes hold of the inner being: Kama, the water. We have the constellation of Pisces. Present moment. The theosophical movement [gap in the transcript] Then it continues. Future: Aquarius, Sagittarius, Scorpio, and then again Libra. New cycle from God to man. That which takes place between Libra and Aries – Virgo, Leo, Cancer, Gemini, Taurus, Pisces – is the openly apparent human development of our Earth. On the other hand, we have the hidden development in the deity. It lies between Libra and Pisces. So everything that lies on the other side, externally visible development, can be seen through G/gap in the transcript]. Everything else lies on the outer side when developing internally - night, southern half. The one, the visible, is in a comprehensive sense the content of science. The other half is the content of the mysteries. Of course, only the full science illuminates the whole. Therefore, the theosophical development is the unveiling of the other side, the actual night that becomes day for those who enter into it. Therefore, at Christmas, the sun rises in Virgo and rises higher and higher; at Easter, there is the rebirth from Taurus man to Aries ram; and then it goes through Pisces to the full height of the sun. |
