Lecture II-VIII

A seer such as the writer of the Apocalypse can already see the future evolution of humanity in the astral world. What will enter into evolution after the war of all against all is already being prepared. Those human beings called to carry evolution into the future, beyond the war of all against all, are already being prepared through the wisdom taught in Theosophy. In far-reaching ways, the spiritual stream of wisdom will become increasingly effective.

When the clairvoyant can observe the modern human being, it sees the etheric body extending a little bit beyond the upper part of the physical body. The etheric body of a man is feminine and the etheric body of a woman is masculine. The astral body, on the other hand, is a flowing structure, variable in terms of color and form, changeable according to the inner life. If we raise our hand the impulse to do so comes from the astral body. When we walk, when we cry or laugh—that is caused by an impulse in the astral body having influence over the physical body. However, what has the most essential influence on human beings is their I. The I works in an altogether roundabout way through the astral body.

In ancient Atlantean times and in the Lemurian age, human beings were not only able to stretch out their different bodies, but they could also extend and “puff” them up. At that time the physical body was only a very small inclusion; on the other hand, the etheric and astral bodies were gigantic. The astral body might look like one kind of animal but was constantly changing and soon resembled another. Human beings constantly changed their physical form according to the desires and impulses living within them. The air then was filled with thick foggy mists much thicker and water-filled than our mountain fog. The human physical body had the most varied colorings and forms; one could already see in its gelatinous substance indications of the physical organization, for example the blood system and the skeleton. Toward the end of Atlantis the air was cleared of thick watery masses. Only then could human beings become the creatures of air and earth that we are today. Atlanteans did not see the sun at all the way it is seen today; it was seen as the mighty ring of the sun. Because the air was never free of water, there were never any rainbows. Only after the separation of water and air were rainbows possible. The entire process of the Atlantean flood is portrayed in the story of Noah and the rainbow. (Genesis 9:12–17)

It was also necessary for the beings on the earth to pass through their stages of evolution at very different times. If a portion of humanity in the early stages of Atlantis had not wanted to descend into a “densified” physical body, then the human form would have remained as it was—with all the instincts, desires, and passions still expressed in the physical form. However, there were beings that became solid, hardened at that time. Animals are nothing more than beings that entered into a hardened, dense condition too early. What the human being carries in the astral body today in terms of desires and passions has come to expression in the physical body of the various animals. Each of the groups of animals developed a particular instinct, and is “congealed” or solidified in it. During the Lemurian age it was the mammals; they are human passions that have congealed into a rigid form. What we carry within ourselves presents itself as a picture in the various animals. With human beings, the instincts have been gradually refined and we can hide them in our heart. The lowest instincts of the human being were first to fall into the physical world during eruptions of natural forces in the earlier times of Lemuria. The apes represent, so to speak, the last lower instincts to fall or be pushed into physical matter before the soul of the human being was itself hardened in matter. With some animals, horses for example, we still find today as a peculiarity the etheric body of the head extending beyond the physical head. That was the case with Atlantean human beings. A certain point in the human etheric body moved into the corresponding part of the physical body only in the last third of the Atlantean age. Only then were human beings able to develop a physical form appropriate for the spirit.

There are sixteen groups of human instincts and passions and so too, are there sixteen groups of animals. Zoology will one day understand how these sixteen groups were gradually “precipitated out” of the spiritual world. We can easily say how the various parts of the mammal groups were created. The formation of hoofs, for example, occurred when, in a very special way, animal nature closed off from the outer world. Claws were created through aggression. The hoofed animals express a very different stage of evolution than animals with claws. We see just such a contradiction expressed in the forms of the centaur and the sphinx.

This is portrayed in the second part of Faust, a very important book from the occult point of view. The Sphinx encounters Mephistopheles and laughs at him because of his horse hooves, which are a sign of a hardened nature, a nature that has egotistically closed itself off from the world.

If we cut our finger we feel pain; this shows us the bearer of feelings, the astral body. Earlier, when the human being's entire nature was still soft, the hair growth was also permeated by astral forces. We are told of Esau that he was covered with hair; he was still retarded in his development and in his power of judgment. For this reason Jacob could trick him, because Jacob had already come further in the development of his power of judgment, of his I. There are forces again working outward in human beings today. The more the I has mastery over the astral body, the more the physical body can also be molded and transformed. Today we have our karma within us like a life account, with a balance of everything we have prepared in our various incarnations. But because the human being's physical nature expresses very little of the I, we carry our karma inwardly and unmediated. But later it will show itself on the human face. Humankind will evolve in the future so that its karma is carried on the countenance. No longer will the fact that a human being is born into a specific race or in a specific climate be decisive for external appearances. There will be rather a class of good people and a class of evil people. Let us understand Paul correctly, who said: “I live, but it is no longer I who live, but Christ in me.” (Gal. 2:20) What is called “receiving the Yahweh-Christ being” will later show itself in human beings externally. Today it is still possible to be a rogue and yet hide it; but in the future, human beings will carry the mark of their inner life on their foreheads.

Let us look at the human being after the war of all against all. We can think of him or her as someone with radiant, good features and a noble benevolent expression. This will become the fate of those who have taken in spiritual impulses at the right time. All moral, intellectual, and spiritual forces will, in the future, confront us visibly in the external features of a human being. What is taken in today will be sealed into souls. After the seventh age, after the war of all against all, they will be unsealed.

That is what the writer of the Apocalypse sees in the seven seals that will gradually be broken. The book with the seven seals is not intended to be like our books or like ancient scrolls. What is intended is a succession of events. The succession of epochs is the concept of the Apocalyptic “books” as, for example, the Evangelist Matthew speaks of the succession of generations, of the lineage of Jesus of Nazareth. Orders of succession are created in this way. The book tells us that the power of the lamb can break the seals.

That gives us an idea of what is intended with the seven seals.

Ein solcher Seher wie der Schreiber der Apokalypse vermag jetzt schon in der Astralwelt die Zukunft der Menschheitsentwickelung zu schauen. Was eintreten wird nach dem Krieg aller gegen alle, bereitet sich jetzt schon vor. Die Menschen, die berufen sind hinüberzutragen über den Krieg aller gegen alle die Entwickelung für die Zukunft, werden jetzt schon vorbereitet durch die theosophische Weisheitslehre. Immer mehr wird die spirituelle Weisheitsströmung sich geltend machen in umfassender Weise.

Wenn der hellseherische Blick den heutigen Menschen beobachten kann, so sieht er den Ätherleib um ein weniges über den physischen Oberkörper hinausragen. Es ist ja der Ätherleib des Mannes weiblich und der Ätherleib der Frau männlich. Der Astralleib hingegen ist ein fließendes Gebilde, in bezug auf Farbe und Gestalt sehr wandelbar, je nach dem Innenleben des Menschen veränderlich. Wenn wir eine Hand heben, so muß der Impuls dazu aus dem Astralleib kommen; wenn wir gehen, wenn wir weinen oder lachen, so sind das die Impulse des Astralleibes, die so auf den physischen Leib Einfluß haben. Das, was aber den wesentlichsten Einfluß auf den Menschen hat, ist sein Ich. Das Ich arbeitet durchaus auf dem Umwege über den Astralleib.

In der alten atlantischen Zeit und in der lemurischen Zeit war der Mensch nicht nur imstande, seine Glieder auszustrecken, sondern er konnte sie auch dehnen und aufplustern. Der physische Leib war dazumal nur ein ganz kleiner Einschluß; der Ätherleib und der Astralleib waren dagegen riesengroß. Der Astralleib sah aus bald wie diese, bald wie jene Tiergestalt. Der Mensch wechselte fortwährend seine physische Gestalt, je nachdem, was er als Begierden und Impulse in sich trug. Die Luft war dazumal angefüllt mit dichten Nebeldünsten, viel dichter und wäßriger als unsere heutigen Gebirgsnebel. Der physische Leib des Menschen hatte die verschiedensten Färbungen und Formen, und man sah in seiner gallertartigen Substanz schon angedeutet seine physische Organisation, wie Blut- und Knochensystem. Gegen Ende der Atlantis reinigte sich die Luft von den dichten wäßßrigen Massen. Da erst konnte der Mensch das Luft- und Erdengeschöpf werden, das er heute ist. Als Atlantier sah man noch gar nicht die Sonne so wie heute, sondern man sah sie als mächtigen Sonnenring. Da dazumal die Luft niemals wasserfrei war, gab es auch keinen Regenbogen. Erst als sich Wasser und Luft verteilten, wurde der Regenbogen möglich. Der ganze Vorgang von der atlantischen Flut wird uns dargestellt in der Erzählung von Noah und dem Regenbogen. (1. Mose 9, 12-17)

Nun war es auch notwendig, daß die Wesen auf der Erde sich so entwickelten, daß sie zu ganz verschiedenen Zeiten ihre Entwickelungsstufe durchmachten. Hätte ein Teil der Menschheit in der ersten atlantischen Zeit nicht gewartet mit dem Niederstieg in den verdichteten physischen Leib, so wäre die Menschengestalt so geblieben, wie sie damals war mit allem, was in der physischen Form sich noch ausdrückte als Triebe, Begierden und Leidenschaften seines Astralleibes. Es gab dazumal Wesen, die sich verfestigt, verhärtet hatten. Die Tiergruppen sind ja nichts anderes als zu früh in die Verhärtung gegangene Wesen. Was der Mensch heute im Astralleibe als Begierde und Leidenschaft trägt, das hat sich bei den verschiedenen Tieren im physischen Leibe ausgedrückt. Eine jede dieser Tiergruppen hat einen besonderen Trieb ausgebildet und ist darin erstarrt. Während der lemurischen Zeit waren es die Säugetiere; sie sind in Erstarrung geratene menschliche Leidenschaften. Das, was wir in uns tragen, das stellt sich im Bilde in den verschiedenen Tieren dar. Bei uns Menschen werden die Instinkte nach und nach verfeinert, und wir können sie verbergen in der Brust. So sind in den ältesten Zeiten während der wilden Ausbrüche lemurischer Naturgewalten zuerst in die Physis geschossen die niedersten Instinkte des Menschenwesens. Die Affen sind sozusagen die Repräsentanten der letzten niederen Instinkte, die in die physische Materie geschossen sind, ehe der Mensch selbst sein Seelisches in der Materie verhärtete. Bei manchen Tieren, zum Beispiel beim Pferde, finden wir noch heute als Absonderlichkeit den Ätherleib des Kopfes herausragend über den physischen Kopf. So war es auch beim atlantischen Menschen. Ein bestimmter Punkt im menschlichen Ätherleib rückte erst im letzten Drittel der atlantischen Zeit hinein an die entsprechende Stelle im physischen Kopfe. Da wurde der Mensch erst fähig, seine geistgemäße Gestalt ausbilden zu können.

Es gibt sechzehn Gruppen menschlicher Instinkte und Leidenschaften und so gibt es auch sechzehn Tiergruppen. Das wird auch die Zoologie einmal einsehen, wie all das sich nach und nach heraussetzte. Wir können leicht angeben, wie die verschiedenen Glieder der Säugetiernatur sich abgliedern mußten. Die Hufbildung trat zum Beispiel dadurch ein, daß sich die Natur des Tieres in ganz besonderer Weise gegen die Außenwelt abschloß. Durch das Aggressive bildeten sich die Krallen oder Tatzen. Eine ganz andere Entwickelungsstufe als die der Huftiernatur drückt die Krallennatur aus. Einen solchen Gegensatz sehen wir auch ausgedrückt in den Kentaur- und Sphinxgestalten.

In dem zweiten Teil des «Faust», einem okkult sehr wichtigen Buche, wird das dargestellt, wo die Sphinxe dem Mephistopheles begegnen und ihn auslachen wegen seines Pferdehufes als Zeichen der sich im Hufe verhärteten Natur, einer Natur, die sich egoistisch gegen die Welt abgeschlossen hat.

Wenn wir uns in den Finger schneiden, so spüren wir das durch den Schmerz; das zeigt uns der Träger der Empfindungen, der Astralleib. Der Haarwuchs war früher, als die ganze menschliche Natur noch weich war, auch von astralischen Kräften durchsetzt. Es wird uns von Esau erzählt, daß er starken Haarwuchs hatte; er war eben noch zurückgeblieben in seiner Entwickelung und in seiner Urteilskraft. Jakob konnte ihn deshalb überlisten, weil er schon weiter gediehen war in der Entwickelung seiner Urteilskraft, seines Ich. Es wirken auch heute im Menschen solche Kräfte, die wieder mehr nach außen hin arbeiten. Je mehr das Ich die Herrschaft haben wird über den Astralleib, desto mehr wird auch der physische Leib wieder plastisch umgearbeitet werden können. Heute hat der Mensch sein Karma in sich als Lebenskonto, als die Bilanz alles dessen, was der Mensch in den verschiedenen Inkarnationen vorbereitet hat. Weil aber des Menschen Physis sehr wenig das Ich ausdrückt, deshalb hat der Mensch sein Karma innerlich, unmittelbar; später aber wird es sich auf seinem Antlitz ausdrücken. In Zukunft wird sich die Menschheit so entwickeln, daß sie ihr Karma auf dem Antlitz tragen wird. Nicht mehr das Geborenwerden in einer bestimmten Rasse oder in einem bestimmten Klima wird das Ausschlaggebende für das Äußere sein; sondern es wird eine Klasse der guten und eine Klasse der bösen Menschen geben. Verstehen wir recht den Paulus, der da sagt: «Ich lebe, doch nun nicht ich, sondern der Christus in mir.» (Vgl. Gal. 2, 20) Das, was man das Aufnehmen der Jahve-ChristusNatur nennt, wird sich beim Menschen später im Äußeren zeigen. Heute ist es dem Menschen noch möglich, Spitzbube zu sein und das zu verbergen, aber in Zukunft wird der Mensch das Malzeichen seines Innern an der Stirne tragen.

Sehen wir uns den Menschen an nach dem Kriege aller gegen alle. Wir können ihn uns denken als einen Menschen mit strahlenden guten Zügen und edlem, wohlwollendem Ausdruck. Das wird solchen zuteil werden, die zur rechten Zeit die spirituellen Impulse aufgenommen haben. Alle moralischen, intellektuellen und spirituellen Kräfte werden in Zukunft uns im Äußeren des Menschen sichtbar entgegentreten. Das, was heute aufgenommen wird, ist in den Seelen versiegelt; das wird aber im siebenten Zeitraum, nach dem Krieg aller gegen alle, entsiegelt werden.

Das ist es, was der Apokalyptiker in den sieben Siegeln sieht, die nach und nach aufgebrochen werden. Das «Buch mit den sieben Siegeln» ist nicht in dem Sinne gemeint wie unsere Bücher oder alten Buchrollen. Damit ist eine Reihenfolge der Tatsachen gemeint. Die Reihenfolge der Epochen ist der Begriff des apokalyptischen «Buches», so wie zum Beispiel der Evangelist Matthäus von der Reihenfolge der Generationen, von der Abstammung des Jesus von Nazareth spricht. So bilden sich Reihenfolgen heraus. Das wird dargestellt in dem Buche, das durch die Kraft des Lammes entsiegelt werden kann.

Das gibt uns einen Begriff davon, was mit den sieben Siegeln gemeint ist.

Eighth Lecture

A seer such as the writer of the Apocalypse is already able to see the future of human development in the astral world. What will happen after the war of all against all is already being prepared. The people who are called upon to carry over the development for the future from the war of all against all are already being prepared through theosophical wisdom teaching. The spiritual stream of wisdom will increasingly assert itself in a comprehensive manner.

When clairvoyant vision observes human beings today, it sees the etheric body protruding slightly beyond the physical upper body. The etheric body of the man is female and that of the woman is male. The astral body, on the other hand, is a fluid structure, highly changeable in color and form, varying according to the inner life of the human being. When we raise a hand, the impulse must come from the astral body; when we walk, when we cry or laugh, these are impulses from the astral body that influence the physical body. But what has the most essential influence on human beings is their I. The I works entirely indirectly through the astral body.

In ancient Atlantean times and in Lemurian times, human beings were not only able to stretch out their limbs, but they could also extend and inflate them. At that time, the physical body was only a very small enclosure; the etheric body and the astral body, on the other hand, were enormous. The astral body sometimes looked like this animal form, sometimes like that. Human beings constantly changed their physical form, depending on the desires and impulses they carried within themselves. At that time, the air was filled with dense mist, much denser and more watery than our mountain mists today. The physical body of humans had the most diverse colors and shapes, and one could already see hints of its physical organization, such as the blood and bone systems, in its gelatinous substance. Towards the end of Atlantis, the air was cleansed of the dense watery masses. Only then could humans become the creatures of air and earth that they are today. As Atlanteans, people did not see the sun as we do today, but as a powerful ring of sunlight. Since the air was never free of water at that time, there were no rainbows. Only when water and air separated did rainbows become possible. The entire process of the Atlantean flood is described in the story of Noah and the rainbow. (Genesis 9:12-17)

Now it was also necessary that the beings on earth develop in such a way that they went through their stages of development at completely different times. If part of humanity had not waited to descend into the denser physical body during the first Atlantic epoch, the human form would have remained as it was then, with everything that was still expressed in physical form as the impulses, desires, and passions of the astral body. At that time, there were beings who had become solidified and hardened. The animal groups are nothing more than beings that hardened too early. What human beings today carry in their astral bodies as desires and passions has expressed itself in the physical bodies of various animals. Each of these animal groups has developed a particular instinct and has become fixed in it. During the Lemurian era, it was the mammals; they are human passions that have become fixed. What we carry within ourselves is represented in the image of the various animals. In us humans, the instincts are gradually refined, and we can hide them in our hearts. Thus, in the earliest times, during the wild outbursts of Lemurian forces of nature, the lowest instincts of the human being first shot into the physical body. The apes are, so to speak, the representatives of the last lower instincts that shot into physical matter before human beings themselves hardened their souls in matter. In some animals, for example in horses, we still find today, as a peculiarity, the etheric body of the head protruding above the physical head. This was also the case with the Atlantean human being. A certain point in the human etheric body only moved into the corresponding place in the physical head in the last third of the Atlantean epoch. Only then did human beings become capable of forming their spiritual form.

There are sixteen groups of human instincts and passions, and there are also sixteen groups of animals. Zoology will one day recognize how all this gradually emerged. We can easily indicate how the various members of the mammalian nature had to separate. The formation of hooves, for example, came about because the nature of the animal closed itself off from the outside world in a very special way. The claws or paws were formed through aggression. The clawed nature expresses a completely different stage of development from that of the hoofed animals. We also see this contrast expressed in the figures of the centaur and the sphinx.

In the second part of “Faust,” an occult book of great importance, this is depicted when the sphinxes encounter Mephistopheles and laugh at him because of his horse's hoof, a sign of nature hardened in the hoof, a nature that has closed itself off selfishly from the world.

When we cut our finger, we feel it through pain; this is shown to us by the bearer of sensations, the astral body. In earlier times, when the whole of human nature was still soft, hair growth was also permeated by astral forces. We are told that Esau had thick hair; he was simply backward in his development and in his power of judgment. Jacob was able to outwit him because he was already further advanced in the development of his power of judgment, his ego. Such forces are still at work in human beings today, working more outwardly. The more the ego gains control over the astral body, the more the physical body will be able to be remodeled. Today, human beings have their karma within themselves as a life account, as the balance sheet of everything that human beings have prepared in their various incarnations. But because the human physical body expresses very little of the ego, human beings have their karma internally, immediately; later, however, it will be expressed on their faces. In the future, humanity will develop in such a way that it will carry its karma on its face. It will no longer be being born into a particular race or climate that will determine one's outward appearance; instead, there will be a class of good people and a class of evil people. Let us understand correctly what Paul means when he says, “I live, yet not I, but Christ lives in me.” (cf. Gal. 2:20) What is called the absorption of the Yahweh-Christ nature will later show itself in the outer appearance of human beings. Today it is still possible for people to be scoundrels and hide it, but in the future people will bear the mark of their inner nature on their foreheads.

Let us look at human beings after the war of all against all. We can imagine them as people with radiant, good features and a noble, benevolent expression. This will be granted to those who have taken up the spiritual impulses at the right time. In the future, all moral, intellectual, and spiritual forces will be visible to us in the outer appearance of human beings. What is taken up today is sealed in the souls; but this will be unsealed in the seventh period, after the war of all against all.

This is what the apocalyptic writer sees in the seven seals that are gradually being broken. The “book with seven seals” is not meant in the sense of our books or ancient scrolls. It refers to a sequence of events. The sequence of epochs is the concept of the apocalyptic “book,” just as, for example, the evangelist Matthew speaks of the sequence of generations, of the descent of Jesus of Nazareth. This is how sequences emerge. This is depicted in the book that can be unsealed by the power of the Lamb.

This gives us an idea of what is meant by the seven seals.
